Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 20, 1912.
Application filed March 25, 191i). Serial No. 551,545.
- Be it known "that I, LEWIS B. DOMAN, a and a resident of. the city of Syracuse, county of Onondaga, and State of New York, have lnvented certain new and useful Improvements in of which the following is a-specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, in whichh Figure 1 is a sectional view of "my improved valve; Fig. 2 is atop'plan view looking downwardly on- Fig. 1"; Fig. 3 15a plan view of the bottom. looking upwardly at Fig. 1, with the lower part of 'the air chamber removed Fig. 4 is anenlarged view of a part of said valve shown in Fig. 1.
throughout the several figures.
This inventionrelates to valve mechanisms in pneumatic actions, more particularly used in mechanical musical instruments, and 1ts is to provide a simple and efiicient means for controlling leading from the pneumatic action proper that the operation of the instrument, as for instance an automatic piano player, can be cutout of use during the re-windingof the music from the take-up roll to the music roll. My improved device, however, is not limited to musical instruments, but may be used in any other mechanism where it is desirable to control the air passage.
Referring now to the figures, and assuming that the pneumatic action is one employing rarefied air, or that operates under a X. represents an air chamber for the'elements making up the valve.
A is a pipe connected tothe pneumatic action.
B is apipe or passage connected to the wind Chest. 015 the bellows.
D is a flexible diaphragm, preferably made of leather, extending horizontally across-the, air chamber X and located to close the orifice of the passage A at G, as shown. in Fig. 1. I
E is a" tube with a manually controlled valve placed in any position jconvenie'nt to the operator; F is another tube connected below the diaphragm D as shown in Fig. 1, and likewise with a nipple G containing a restricted passage or air vent.
The operation of my improved valve is as .to the wind chest, so
' pheric air follows. The passage B is under partial vacuum or rarefied air and is connected with the pipe or passage A as shown in Fig. 1. If air at atmospheric pressure he admitted to the compartment M below the diaphragm through the tube E, such diaphragm D will at once rise and close the passage at the lower end of the pipe A at C,l'l1llS preventing air under a partial vacuum from passing through the passage A and thereby. cutting out of operation the pneumatic action or other device operating under the partial vacuum which may be connected to the pipe A. lVhen it is desired to open the passages so as to connect A with B the tube E is closed and the excess pressure, that is the pressure of the atmosphere in the compartment M under the diaphragm D is immediately equalized through the passages F and G, and this will cause the diaphragm E to fall and restore the unrestricted passage through the pipe A, the compartment N, and the pipe B.
WYhat I claim as new-and desire to secure by Il etters Patent is the following, viz
1. In combination with a pneumatic action, a valve comprising an air chamber, a
conduit leading from the wind chest into said air chamber, a second conduit leading tronr the pneumatic action and projecting within said air chamber to form a, valveseat, a flexible diaphragm extending across said air chamber to provide a closure for said valve-seat, means for admitting air to inflate said diaphragm to close the valve, and means to equalize the air pressure on both sides of the diaphragm to open the valve.
2. In combination with a pneumatic action, a valve comprising an air chamber, a conduit leadlng from-the wind chest into said air chamber, a second conduit leading I from the pneumatic action and projecting w1th1n said air chamber to form a valveseat, a flexible diaphragm extending across said air chamber to provide a closure for said valve-seat, a tube. opening to atmosbelow said. diaphragm to inflate same to elosethe' valve, anda restricted passag'econnectin the compartments bn opposite sides 0 the diaphragm to. deflate same to openthe valve. when the tube controlling -atmospheric air is closed.
3. In combination with a pneumatic'action, a valve comprising anair chamber X,
the pipe A anctthe pipe B, both opening into the exhaust chamber N of the air chain; her X, the pipe B projecting into said air chamber to form a valve-seat C, the dia- -phragm D extending across said air cha1nher and adapted to close the valve-seat C, the tube E to admltair at atmospheric pres-4 sure belowthe diaphragm D to inflate same to close the valve-seat C, and the restricted air passages F, G, connecting the conipart- 10 ments M and N on opposite sides of the diaphragm I) to deflate same to ,open the Valve 'when the tube 1 1) is closed.
