UNITED STATES PATENT oEErcE.v
LOUIS RUSSELL KILLINGSWORTH, OF SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH. l
SASH-FASTENER.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS RUSSELL KIL- LINGSWORTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at 74 Main street, Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners, of which the follo-wing is a specification.
This invention relates to sash fasteners designed for locking the window in closed as well as in open or partly open position; and it is the object of the invention to provide a fastener of this kind which is very simple in construction, and which can be readily applied and easily operated.
The invention also has for its object to provide a double fastener, one of the members of which must first be released before the other member can be released.
With these objects in view, the invention consists in a novel construct-ion and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of thisl specification, in which drawing- Figure 1 is an elevation of a window showing the application of the invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional detail showing one of the members of the double lock.
Referring specifically to the drawing, 5 denotes the upper and 6 the lower sash of the window. The window jambs are indicated at 7.
The fastener for the upper sash 5 comprises a vertical rod 8 carried by said sash and adapted to be locked by means of a set screw 9 in a casing 10 carried by one of the jambs 7.
The fastener for the lower sash 6 comprises the following parts: One of the Stiles of the sash carries a vertical, tubular rod 13 which is spaced from the face of said stile and is fastened at its upper end to the top thereof, said rod being provided with outstanding ears 14 through which pass screws or other suitablefastening means for securing the rod to the stile. Near its upper end the rod passes loosely through an opening in a block l5 fastened to the jamb 7. The block is split on one side up to the opening. A set screw 16 is threaded through the split portion of the block, whereby it Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led May 31, 1911.
I may be drawn together to Patented Feb. 27, 1912. Serial No. 630,409.
clamp the rod and thus lock the sash.
Additional fastening means for the lower sash are also provided, said means comprising the following parts: Below the block 15 the jamb 7 carries a sheath 17 into which the rod 13 extends. The sheath is provided with perforated attaching ears 18 through which pass screws or other suitable fastening means for securing the sheath tothe j amb. The length of the rod and the sheath is such that the lower sash may be placed in wide open position without the rod being withdrawn from the sheath. Intermediate its ends the sheath carries a latch for locking the rod therein. This latch comprises a shank 19 pivoted at its upper end, as indicated at 20, to the sheath, on the outside thereof, and having at its lower free end a laterally extending head 21 adapted to pass through registering perforations 22 and 23, respectively, in the rod and sheath. The rod has a series of perforations so that the sash may be locked in different positions. The head 21 is joined to the shank 19 by a narrow portion or neck 24 which forms a shoulder 25. The head is adapted to enter the interior of the rod 13, by being passed through the perforations 22 and 23. After the head has been inserted into the rod, a slight movementk of the sash downward forces the upper edge of the perforation 22 behind the shoulder 25, which prevents withdrawal of the head 21 without first lifting the sash so as to disengage said edge from the shoulder; but before the sash can be lifted it is necessary to first release the clamping block 15.
A strong and secure fastening for the sash is thus had, and also one which is simple in construction, readily applied, and easily operated to fasten or release the sash.
The sheath also acts as a guide for the rod and prevents it from sticking or binding in the block when the latter is loosened and the sash is raised or lowered.
I claim: i
In a sash fastener, the combination of a vertical, tubular rod carried by the sash, clamping means carried by the jamb and engageable with the rod, a sheath carried by the jainb into which sheath the rod eX- tends, said sheath and rod having perforations which are adapted to be placed in registering position, a latch carried by the In testimony whereof I aiix my signature `a sheath and adapted to be inserted through in presence of tWo Witnesses. :l
