Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed June 21, 1910. Serial No. 568,147.
may be used in connection with beds of the ordinary type and which will enable the nurse to readily raise a stretcher, on which the patient rests, to a position above the mattress of the ordinary bed.
Another obj cct of the invention is to provide the stretcher with a hinged back member and means by,which it may be raised, relatively to the stretcher, so that the patient may besupported while sitting up in bed.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a detachable extension apparatus, to which adhesive strips are secured, which may be attached to a limb of the patient in cases of fracture to reduce the danger of the limb becoming shortened.
Still other objects of the invention will appear in the following complete description.
In this specification I will describe the preferred form of my invention, it being understood that the scope of the invention is defined in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my apparatus in use; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is an end view at the head of the bed; Fig. 4: is a transverse sectional view looking toward the foot of the bed, and Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view, showing one set of the bars at the ends of the stretcher for keeping the reinforcing bars spaced from each other.
By referring to the drawings, it will be seen that four standards 5 are provided, two of these standards 5 being disposed at the foot of the bed and two at the head. These standards 5 are connected at their bottom by base members 6, and at their upper terminals by transverse frame members 7, respectively. Rollers 8 are journaled in the trans- .verse frame members 7, belts 9 being secured to the rollers 8 at one set of the terminals, the other set of the terminals being secured around eyes or loops 10, which are normally engaged by hooks 11 secured to the side members 12 of a stretcher 13. These side members 12 of the stretcher 13 are connected at each end by a pair of transverse members 14. At each end one of the transverse members 1% is secured to one of the side members 12, the transverse members being secured together by clamps 149, the transverse members and the clamps serving as expanders. The canvas 15 of the stretcher 13 is reinforced at its sides by bars 15* and is laced to the transverse members 14. Straps 12 are secured to the reinforcing bars 15 and are disposed over the side member 12. This canvas 15 has an opening 16 therein. To the side members 12 of the stretcher 13 are hinged side members 17 of a back 18, arm-rests 19 being hinged to the side members 17, two curved arms 20 being hinged to the bottom of the arm-rests 19, the arms 20 being disposed through openings 21 in' the side members 17 and being provided with teeth for engaging the sides of these openings, by which means the arm-rests may be adjusted and may be supported to meet all needs. The side members 12 of the stretcher 13 have openings 22 through which the curved arms 20 are disposed when the back 18 is lowered.
Connecting the transverse frame members 7 are three rods 23, one of these rods 23 being provided with a yoke 24 in which are j ournaled rollers 25, cords 26 bemg provided, these cords having one set of terminals secured to the back 18, the cords being disposed around the rollers 25, the other set of terminals of the cords being secured to a drum 27. The drum 27 is secured to a shaft 28, the shaft 28 being journaled in lugs 29 which are secured to the transverse frame members 7 at the head of the bed. A crank 30 is secured to the shaft 28, by which it may be rotated. A pawl 31 is-pivoted to the transverse frame member 7 at the head of the bed, this pawl engaging a ratchet wheel 32 secured to the shaft 28. The rollers 8 extend through the transverse frame member 7 at the head of the bed. A shaft 33 is journaled in bearings 34, secured to the standards 5 at the head of the bed,
worm gears 35 being provided which connect the rollers 8 with the shaft 33, a crank 36 being secured to the shaft 33, by which means the shaft 33 may be rotated and the belts 9 may be wound or unwound on the rollers 8, as may be desired. By referring to Fig. 3 of the drawings, it will be seen that one of the worm gears has a righthand thread and the other a left-hand thread, so that the belts may be wound or unwound simultaneously on the rollers 8 by the rotation of the shaft 33.
The extension apparatus at the foot of the bed consists of a clamp member 37 having an opening 38 in which the standard 39 is disposed, this clamp 37 having depending flanges 40 at its terminals, there being a threaded orifice in one of these depending flanges 40 in which a screw 41 meshes. The other depending flange 40 is disposed against the inner side of the transverse member 14 of the stretcher 13, situated at the foot of the bed. Itwill therefore be seen that when the screw 41 is turned home, it will engage the standard 39 and will press it against the outer side of the said transverse member 14 of the stretcher 13, by which means the standard will be held in position relatively to the stretcher. This standard 39 may be bent outwardly and upwardly, as indicated in the drawings. The upper terminal of the standard 39 is bifurcated and a pulley 42 is journaled in this bifurcated portion. A cord 43 is disposed over the pulley 42, the inner terminal of the cord 43 being secured to a block 44, the other terminal being secured to a bar 45, to which weights 46 are attached. The block 44 is cut into two members, which are secured together by screws 47, an adhesive strip 48 being disposed between the members of the block 44, after which the members are secured by the said screws 47. A support for the foot of the mattress 49 has transverse members 50, which are secured to curved leg sections 51, the leg sections 51 being provided with guideways 52 in which the curved leg sections 53 are disposed, screws 54 being provided which mesh in threaded orifices in the leg sections 51 in close proximity to the guideways 52, the screws 54 engaging the leg sections 53 to hold them relatively to the leg sections 51. Bearings 58 are secured to the side members 12 of the stretcher 13 at the foot of the bed, rollers 59 being journaled in these bearings, the guide wheels en gaging the standards 5 at the foot of the bed to guide the stretcher 13 as it is raised and as it is lowered.
In using my invention, the head 55 of the side members 56 of the bed is left in position, but the foot of the bed is removed, the side members 56 of the bed of the ordinary type resting on the transverse members 50 of the support. The mattress 49 is support ed on the side members 56 in the usual manner. The side members 56 and the mattress 49 are supported by the head 55 of the bed and the transverse members 50 of the support. The standards 5, with the base mem ber 6 and the transverse frame member 7, are disposed at the head and foot of the bed, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the standards 5 at the foot of the bed being disposed at a greater distance from each other than are the standards 5 at the head of the bed, the standards 5 at the foot of the bed also being disposed away from each other a distance greater than the width of a single bed, so that the standards 5 at the foot of the bed may be disposed one at the outer side of each of the side members 56, this construction being provided to facilitate the movement of the standards into position.
Then the standards are in position, it will be understood that the stretcher 13 is disposed over the mattress 49. It will also be understood that the stretcher 13 may be raised or lowered by means of the crank 36. The back 18 may be raised, or may be lowered relatively to the stretcher 13, by means of the crank 30, it being possible to adjust readily the back 18 relatively to the stretcher 1.3, no matter at what height the stretcher is raised above the mattress 49. It will also be clearly understood that the clamp 37 may be disposed with one of its flanges against the inner side of the transverse member 14 at the foot of the stretcher, so that by turning the screw 41, the standard 39 will be held in position relatively to the stretcher, permitting the arrangement of the block 47, the cord 43 and the weight 46. The armrests 19 may be readily raised and adjusted relatively to the back 18 by means of the curved arms 20, having the teeth which engage the orifices in the side members 17 in the back.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
