To all whom it may concern:

Be itknown that I, JAM S A. W. SEARS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chattanooga, in the county of Hamilton and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chairs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to chairs and more particularly to a combination chair.

An object of the invention is to provide a chair which may be employed either as a parlor chair, reclining chair or as a hair dressing chair.

An object of the invention is to provide a chair having a back and arms soxconstructed as to conceal mirrors and toilet.

articles such as combs, brushes,hair pins,

etc.

Another object is to provide a chair of this character, one arm of which may be so constructed as to allow a portion of the same, carrying a disappearing mirror to be swung to a position in front; of the chair, said portion also carrying a folding shelf.

Another object is to provide a chair of this character which may have the sides and back provided with lids or covers which may either be folded outwardly to form shelves or closed overthe back and arms to give a finished appearance to the chair when the same is to be used as a parlor chair.

Other objects and. 'dvantages. will be hereinafter referred to land more particularly pointed out inthe specification.

In the accompanying drawings whichare made a part of this application, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the chair with arts in position for use as a hair dressing c air. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through I the mirror andv shelf carrying portion of one arm, with the mirror concealed in this portion. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective View of the upper portionof the other arm, and, Fig. 4 is a fragmentary cross sectional view through the lower portion of the chair with its parts arranged as shown in Fig. 1. Referring moreparticularly to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts in the several views, 1 represents the seat and 2 the back of the chair. It will be understood that the seat and back may be of any form desired and may be upholstered or finished in any preferred manner.

The back carries any suitable pocket to receive the U-shape mirror support 3, the opposite arms Of-Which project upwardly, while the connecting or horizontal portion is adapted to rest in the bottom of the pocket when the mirror. 4 is within the pocket. The mirror 4 is-mounted in a suitable frame 5 which is pivoted at opposite points to the upper ends of the parallel arms of the U-shape member 3 to support the mirror and frame between said arms. The frame 5 is provided with suitable lifting straps 6 by means of which the mirror may be withdrawn from the pocket to its position shown in Fig. 1 to allow said mirror to be swung at various angles between the arms of the U-shape mirror supporting member 3. The supporting member 3 is held in its upper-most position by means of the latch springs 7 secured to the parallel arms and adapted for engagement against the top of the chair back 2 to prevent the supporting frame 3 from dropping back into the mirror pocket until the latch springs 7 are pressed against the arms to which they are secured. Each latch'sp'ring upper end secured to an arm of the supporting frame 3.while its lower portion is bent outwardly and the lower extremit-yagain bent toward the arm to be pressed into a slotprovided therefor in said arm to allow the frame 3 to move downwardly into the mirror pocket. When the supporting frame 3 and mirror frame 5 are within the pocket provided therefor in the chair back, they may be hidden from view-by a lidor cover 8 hinged to the upper edge of the'chair'back and adapted to be folded over the latter to cover the mouth of the mirror pocket. v

One arm 9 has its upper portion hollowed out "to provide the pocket 10 within which may be storedtoilet articles such as combs,

brushes and hair pins and a lid 11 is hinged to the outer edge of said arm to be folded over the latter to cover the mouth of the pocket 10 or to be folded outwardly to form a shelf and open the pocket 10, as .will be clearly understood. The lower portion of the arm 9 maybe finished in any preferred manner-"and provided with casters at each bracket 17. I

The swinging bracket 17 and mirror carrying member 18 are adapted to be folded into the arm '12 betweenthe stand-' ards 13 and 14 and beneath the connecting board 15 and held in position by the turn buttons 19 carried by the standards 13 and 14. The'mirror carrying member 18 may be readily handled and withdrawn from the arm 12 and placed in position in front of the seat 1 of'the chair, by means of the hand holds 20, carried upon the outer face of said-member. The member may also be readily rolled uponthe casters 21, carried thereby, to its various positions.

Within the mirror carrying member 18 is the U-shape mirror supporting bracket 22,

the upwardly extending parallel arms of which support a mirror carrying frame 23 therebetween, said frame being pivoted to the parallel arms, of the supporting member 3 to allow the mirror to be swung at various angles. The frame 23 also carries lifting straps 24 similar to the straps 6 carried by the mirror frame 5 and the arms of the mirror frame supporting member 22 are provided with latch'springs 25 similar to the latch springs 7 carried bythe sup porting frame 3. It will be understood that these springs automatically assume their outward-position to prevent the downward movement of the supporting frames by which they are carried when said frames are brought to their uppermost positions. When it -is'desired to allow the supporting frames to descend and carry the mirror frames into the pockets provided therefor, the latch springs are pressed against the arms to which they are secured, to allow said arms to descend.

Secured along the'upper edge-of the mirror carrying member 18 and upon the inner face thereof isthe shelf carrying strip 26 to the lower edge of which is hinged the shelf 27 which is adapted to be supported in a horizontal position by the supporting arm 28, the upper end of which is pivoted to the shelf #27 while the lower end is adapted for engagement against the stop 29 carried by the: member 1 8. Wheh 'the bracket 17 and mirror carrying member 18 are to be placed between the standards 13 and 14 and-beneath the connecting board 15, the lower end of the supporting arm 28 is disengaged from the stop 29 to allow said arm and shelf 27 to drop against the member 18 and depend from the shelf carrying strip 26.

It will thus be seen that I have provided a chair which may be readily converted into either a parlor chair or a hair dressing chair and one of such construction as to pres'ent a neat appearance at all times.. It will also be apparent that this chair is of strong and durable construction andmay be employed for various purposes such as a readingchair, areclining chair, etc.

What I claim is 1. A chair comprising a seat, back-and arms, a mirror carrying member connected to onearm and adapted to be folded into the same to form a part. of said arm, and means for supporting the mirror carrying member.

2. A chair comprising a seat, arms and back, a mirror carrying member connected to one of said arms and adapted to be swung to a position opposite the back, a mirror for said mirror carrying member and a shelf carried by said member.
