PRESS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 2, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVINN E. BROUGI-ITON, a citizen of the United States, residing in Peabody, county of Essex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Presses, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to a press espe cially designed among other uses for marking hides, skins and leather in tanneries, whereby the hides or skins of difierent qualities or lots may be identified, traced and classified, as they pass through the different processes now commonly practised in tannerles.
The invention has for its object to provide a simple, efficient, inexpensive and rapidly working machine for the purpose specified.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a press embodylng this invention, and Fig. 2, a side elevation of the machine shown in Fig; 1 looking toward the right.
In the present instance, the invention is embodied in a manually operated machine, in which 10 represents a movable tool or die carrier, which may have secured to or forming part of it a suitable marking device or tool capable of marking hides, skins or leather. The movable carrier 10 is provided with a stem or rod 12, which slides in a guide 13 attached to a supporting upright 14, provided with a bracket or arm 15, for supporting a bed or cooperating lower platen 16.
The tool carrier 10 is moved toward the lower platen 16 by a helical spring 17, encircling a rod 18, extended upwardly from a head 20 on the rod 12. The head 20 is provided with a finger or projection 21 having a notch 22, with which cooperates a look ing device herein shown as a finger 23 on a crank or arm 24 fast on a rock-shaft 25 extended through a longitudinal slot or opening 26 in the head 20 and having bearin s in the upright 14. The slot or opening 6 in the head 20 permits the tool carrier to be moved downwardly by the spring 17, when the locking finger 23 is disengaged from the notch 22 as will be described.
Provision is made for storing up power in the spring 17 before the head 20 is released, so that when released the said head and its attached tool carrier will be moved substantially in an instant toward the lower platen 16 so as to strike the leather or other work thereon a sharp blow and thereby properly impress upon the work the mark by which it may be identified. In the present instance, the spring 17 bears at its lower end against a collar 27 fixed on the rod 18, and at its upper end against a collar 28 loose on said rod to slide thereon. The loose collar 28 has cooperating with it an arm 29 adjustably secured to a rod 30 extended down through a guide 31 and pivotally connected at its lower end to a foot treadle or lever 32 pivoted at 33 to the base 34 of the upright. The rod 30 has also secured to it a disengaging device or knock-01f arm 35, which is designed to engage the crank 24 and rock the shaft 25 so as to remove the locking finger 23 from the notch 22 in the head 20, and thus place the latter under the influence of the spring 17.
.and as soon as the work has been marked, the pressure of the foot on the treadle is removed, and the latter is elevated by a spring 40 attached to a collar 41 on the rod 30 and to the table 42 which is secured to or forms part of the bracket 15. As the rod 30 is lifted by the spring 40, the spring compressing arm 29 engages a nut 45 on the rod 18 and lifts the latter and the head 20, thereby elevating the movable tool carrier into its normal position represented in the drawing. The upward movement of the rod 18 is limited by an overhanging arm 46 erected upon the upper bearing box for the shaft 25 and at or about the time the nut 45 engages the arm 46, the locking device 23 is again engaged with the notch 22 by a spring 47 which rocks the shaft 25 so as to effect the engagement of the locking device with the said notch.
The lower platen may be adjustably mounted in the bracket or arm 15 by means of the threaded rod 50 and it may be locked in its adjusted position by the nut 51 and set screw 52.
In operation, the leather or other work to be pressed or marked is placed upon the lower platen 16 by the operator, who then depresses the foot treadle to trip the locking device or latch 23 and elfect the rapid movement of the tool carrier into contact with the work.
I have herein shown the invention as embodied in a manually operated press or machine, but it is not desired to limit the invention in this respect.
Claims:
