To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Oznnno FR. HUNT, a citizen of the- United States, residing at- Chicago, inthe county ofCookand State 0t Illinois, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Mattresses, of which the following is 'a specification.

This invention pertains particularly to a ployed on a given spring-structure, and facilitating removal of the mattress 'fOrairing, or for repair purposes.

. A further object is to provide a thoroug-hly practicable form of connection of adjustable character, so that no diificulty will be experienced in connecting the mattress-cover to the spring structure, despite such variations in the spacing of the connecting devices as are likely to occur in the manufacture on a commercial scale.

The invention is illustrated in its preiierred embodiment in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the invention applied to a bed-spring, the view showing the mattress-cover with a portion-broken-away; Fig. 2, a broken vertical sectional view, taken as indicated at line 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a broken perspective view, showing a.corner c'onnectionemployed; Fig. 4, an inner perspective view of the same portion; Fig. 5, a perspective view of a fragment of the marginal frame rod and one of the button-studs adjustably mounted thereon; and Fig. 6,a bro-ken perspective view, showing a *IIIOdI-fiOatlOD.

A J presents aspring structure; and B a mattress detachably mounted thereon. The selected spring-structure, A, is an ordinary bed-spring, having the base-frame 1, coil springs 2 mounted thereon, and suitable means 3, tying the top-rings, 4, of the coils together. As Is usual, the end-rings 4 of the marginal rows of the structure have connected therewith a marginal rod '5: The

marginal bars of the base 1 are equipped with angular bracket-members 6, having vertical arms 7 secured at their lower ends to said marginal bars and having outturned arms .or flanges, 8, which carry a marginal rod -or frame-member 9, upon which are shiftably pivoted mattress connecting members 1-0. The members 10 are preferably in the form of glove-button studs whose shanks are secured to clips or loops 1 1-, pivotally and slida-bly mounted on the rod 9. At the cornersof the structure,clips 12 are secured to'the-rod9, each-clip comprising a piece of sheet-metal bent to angular form, the two arms embracing the cornerportion of the rod and having lugs 13 clenched-on the rod.

plied to a bed, the base portion is hidden by the rails, and the structure with the mattress applied appears much like a well-made boxspring. The construction is sanitary, permits airing the mattress and washing the mattress cover; and is neat and attractive in appearance.

It will be understood that the construction enables a cheap mattresscase to be used; and enables the dealer to supply his customers with mattress covers of design and Value to suit the tastes and financial ability of customers.

As an added feature of advantageous construction, I have shown the sprin structure provided with anchor-chains 19 which connect the upper portions of the marginal rows of coil-springswith the rods 9. These chains incline inwardly and upwardly, as

shown; and, as the tops of all the coils of the structure are tied together, toppling or racking of the coils is efiectively obviated.

In Fig. 6, I have shown a modification, in which an angle-bar 9 serves as a substitute for the rod 9. In this modification, the angle-bar 9 has an inturned flange mounted on brackets 6 carried by the marginal bars of the base of the frame 1. The button studs 10 have their shanks slidably mounted in slots 14* with which the vertical flange 20 of the member 9 is provided. Such a construction, permits ready adjustability of the studs to coincide with the buttonsockets, and the angle-bar 9 may add materially to the strength of the frame of. the springstructure.

The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding only, and no undue limitation should be understood therefrom. While the mattress cover and skirt are by preference made disconnectible from the mattress-pad,the invention is not'limited thereto.

The invention is applicable to bedsprings, and spring bottoms for various purposes. It may be used advantageously in connection with couches, for instance.

The feature of reducing the extremities of the arms 8, as indicated, enables the extremities to be readily curved about the rod 9, thiils forming the eyes 20 which support the ro The mode of attaching the spring cover would be the same, were the mattress 18 to be omitted or placed above the cover. In such case, the skirt 17 would be suitably shortened, so that the cover would merely inclose the springs, instead of both mattress and springs. Where both the slip and mattress are employed, they may be regarded as a cover within the meaning of the claims.

What I regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination with a spring-structure comprising a frame and coil springs supported thereon, of a marginal frahie member equipped with adjustable fastenermembers, and a cover mounted on the springs and having a depending skirt provided with co-acting fastener-members.

2. The combination with a spring-structure comprising a base. and surmounting coil springs, of frame members disposed above said base and adjacent the marginal rows of .coil-springs, button-studs slidably mounted on the same, and a cover mounted on the springs and provided with a skirt equipped with button-sockets, for the purpose set forth.

3. The combination with a spring-structure comprising a base and surmounting coil-springs, said base equipped with brackets having outturned flanges disposed above said base, marginal frame-members carried by said flanges, fastener-members slidably connected therewith, and a cover mounted on the springs and provided with a skirt equipped with fixedly secured fastener-members adapted for engagement with said firstnamed fastener-members.

The combination of a springstructure comprising a base and surmounting coilsprings, said base equipped with brackets having outturned flanges disposed above said base, a marginal rod carried by said flanges, clips slidable on. said rod and equipped with button-studs, and a cover provided with a skirt equipped with button-sockets, for the purpose set forth. 5. The combination with a spring-structure comprising a base and surmounting coil-springs, said base equipped with brackets having outturned flanges disposed above said base, a marginal rod carried by said flanges, clips slidable on said rod and equipped with button-studs, angular cornerclips secured tothe corner portions of said marginal rod and equipped with buttonstuds, and a cover provided with a skirt equipped with button-sockets adapted to receive said button-studs.

6. The combination of a spring-structure, comprising a base and surmounting coilsprings. bracket members having vertical arms secured at their lower ends to said base and having outturned arms with reduced extremities bent to form eyes,and a marginal rod carried by the eyes of said outturned arms.
