BED ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 19, 1912.
Application filed August 2, 1912. Serial No. 712,965.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH. H. SPENCER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Galena, in the county of Cherokee, State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to invalid beds and has for an object to provide a novel adjustable rest which may be inclined to support the patient in various positions, novel means being provided for limiting raising move ment of the rest.
With the above objects in view the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, it being understood that various modifications may be made in the minor details of construction within the scope of the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification :Figure 1 is a side elevation of the bed. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the bed. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the bed with the rest shown in adjusted position. Fig. 4: is a cross sectional View taken on the line 4l4 Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 55 Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 3-3 Fig. 3.
Referring now to the drawing in which like characters of reference designate similar parts, the invention is shown to comprise a skeleton frame including parallel side rails 10 connected by parallel cross bars 11, the 'frame being supported at the forward end by spaced wheels 12 which ride upon the side rails of the bed and are secured to the skeleton frame by hangers 13.
The skeleton frame is suspended from the head of the bed by spaced cables 14: which are secured at the lower ends to the corners of the frame and are trained upwardly through spaced sheaves 15 and 16 carried on each head post 17 of the bed, and are copies of this patent may be obtained for thence terminally wound upon a stand shaft 18 which is journaled in the top rail 19 of the head of the bed and in a stub rail 20 carried below and parallel to the top rail 19. A crank handle 21 is secured to the upper end of the stand shaft, and a ratchet 22 is secured to the shaft and is operatively engaged by a spring pawl 23 carried on the top rail of the bed.
The pulleys 15 next adjacent to the skeleton frame are adjust-ably mounted on the head posts 17 of the bed through the'instru-- mentality of curved straps 24 which encircle the related posts and are adjustably secured thereto through the instrumentality of set screws 25. The free end or wheeled end of the skeleton frame slides longitudinally upon the side rails of the bed upon the shaft 18 being rotated, with a resultant raising or lowering of that end of the skeleton frame which is connected to the cables 14. The raising movement of the frame is limited by contact of the last named end of the frame with the sheaves or pulleys 15, and it is clear that by adjustably securing these pulleys longitudinally of the head posts 17, the frame may be elevated to various heights to accommodate various positions of the patient from reclining to sitting position.
WVhat is claimed, is
The combination with a bed of a rest comprising a skeleton frame, spaced wheels at one end of said frame adapted to ride on the side rails of said bed, suspension cords attached to the opposite end of said frame, a winding drum connected to said cords and adapted to be attached to the bedstead above said frame and guide pulleys for said cord adapted to be adjustably mounted on the posts of a bed, and to contact with and limit raising movement of said rest.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH H. SPENCER.
