Description
G. F. SCHMIDT.
BUCKLE PROTECTOR.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 5, 1912.
1,055,665, I Patent'd Mar. 11, 19131 GODFREY F. SCHMIDT, 0F CENTRALIA, KANSAS.
BUCKLE-PRGTECTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Main-11, 1913.
Application filed September 5, 1912. Serial No. 718,690.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GODFREY F. SCHMIDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at- Centralia, in the county of Nemaha and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckle-Protectors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in buckle protectors and the primary object thereof is to pro vide a protector of this character which will prevent the buckle from getting entangled with the fly net or other articles of harness when the same is in use.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a protector for a device of the aforesaid character which may be readily attached to or detached from the harness and at the same time permit a flexible connection.
A still further object of the present in vention is to provide a protector of this character which will be comparatively inexpensive in the cost of manufacture, strong, durable and efficient when in use, thereby rendering the same commercially desirable.
With the above and other objects in view this invention consists of novel details of construction, combination, formation and arrangement 'of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and particularly pointed out in the appended drawings in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the preferred form of my invention as applied; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the lower face thereof when removed from the buckle; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a slightly modified form, and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of one of the clips used in the modified form.
Reference now being had to the accompanying drawings wherein'like and corre spo-nding parts are designated by similar numerals throughout the several views the numeral 1 indicates an ordinary buckle for connecting the rein lines and having applied thereto my improved protector 2 as shown.
The protector 2 as illustrated in the preferred form of my invention comprises one continuous piece of sheet metal preferably of brass having an elongated medial portion substantially the same width as that of the rein lines and the extremities of this protector are provided with laterally extending portions 4 which are adapted to be bent downwardly to grip the rein line adjacent each end of the buckle as shown. It will be seen from this construction that the elongated medial portion of the protector will prevent any of the other articles of harness mounted upon the horse from coming into engagement with the tongue of the buckle.
It will be noted fro-m the preferred form of my invention that forming the same of one integral piece of material that the connections where the buckle is inserted will be held in a rigid position, but to provide means for giving the buckle the required flexibility and at the same time protecting the same I- provide a protector as illustrated in the modified form of my invention as shown.
In the modified form the same consists of two clips indicated by the numeral 4: being connected at their inner ends by means of a flexible member 5 which is preferably made of leather. This flexible member will obviously protect the buckle and the clips will provide means for holding the same upon the rein lines. Each of these clips are formed of one integral piece of material having their opposite ends bent downwardly and inwardlyto grip the rein lines and the inner ends of each of these clips are provided with a tongue extension 6 which is adapted to extend through the flexible member thereby providing means for securthe said flexible member to each of the 0 ms. t
Whereas in the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings I have illustrated the preferred forms of my invention it is of course to be understood that other minor details as to changes in form, operation and arrangement of parts may be resorted to that come within the scope of the present invention as claimed without departing from the spirit thereof.
VVhat I claim is:
In combination with an elongated member having a pair of slots suitably spaced from the ends thereof, ofapair of integrally formed clips, each comprising a body portion having its opposite ends bent downwardly and inwardly and adapted to grip the opposite edges of a rein line and furmy signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ther provided with a reduced portion, the end of Which is bent downwardly at substantially a right angle and adapted to engage one of said slots, whereby to provide means for detachably securing said member to said clips.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix GODFREY F. SCHMIDT.
Vitnesses:
G. F. RATHBUN, ERNEST NASH.
