GUY CRAVIFDRD, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR,
BY MEsNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO
NEVA SLIP SHIRT WAIST GRIP 00., (INC.,) A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
WAIST-GRIP.
To all "IO/k011i 21 may concern:
ie it known that I, GUY I-I. CRAWFORD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan. in the county and .State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Exist-Grip, of which the following is a full, clear, andexact description.
This invention relates to waist grips intended particularly for womens use, and the object of the invention is to provide such an article characterized by simple construction, which when once fixed in position will remain and not become loose.
The invention is embodied in a construe tion which makes use of a single length of tubular tape a portion of which is doubled back on itself, one end of the tape being adapted to engage a suitable ring carried by the other end, the said first end, after such engagement, cooperating with a second fastener and the said doubled portion, whereby slippingof the parts is prevented when the grip is in use. It is also of some importance in the production of articles similar to the one herein described and claimed that the structure be such that low cost of manufacture is assured in order that the selling price may be such as to meet competition.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specifi-' cation, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view, partly sectional, showing the grip in position for use; F ig'. 2 is a partial longitudinal sectional view thereof; F ig. 3 is a. plan view of the fastener; while Fig. 4 is a side view showing' the manner of mounting tha fastener.
I In the construction specifically shown the QllD comprises a length of tubular tape having an end portion 2, a part of the tape bein folded back on itself in order to provide a reinforced portion 3, this structure is brought about by turning back one end of the tape on itself in order to form a concen- Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 9, 1912.
Patented June 17, 1913. Serial No. 708,402.
Referring particularly to F ig, 3, a fastener adapted for use with the grip isset forth, the fastener comprising abody portion 12 provided with openings 13; this fastener may be made of celluloid, or fiber, or any other suitable material.
Referring to Figs. 2 and l, the numeral 1 designates that portion of the tape beyond the end 8 of the-reinforced portion; this free end is folded at 9 at some intermediate point and inserted through one of the opening's 13 of the fastener 12, being then turned back in the opposite direction through the other opening; 13 in the fastener, the folded part being then inserted between the outer layers of the reinforced portion 3 at the end 8, all of the folds or plys being secured together and the relative position of the parts being insured by securing means 11 passing throng-hail these folds.
The use of the article is as follows: After being positioned around the Waist the free endl is passed through the ring 6, the grip being then tightened, the end 1 being then Wrapped around the parts of itselflying at the rear of the fastener 12, so as to be drawn in between the ends of the said fastener and the parts of the tape lying adjacent thereto, the tension of the grip bringing about a frictional engagement of these parts whereby lengthening of the grip is thereafter prevented, the Waist being securely held on the person of the wearer. The fastener 12 preferably possesses a cer tain amount of flexibility whereby this frictional engagement, with consequent security is insured. 1'
A consideration of what has been said will make clear the fact that a Waist grip pos-. sessing' unusual strength and simplicity is provided through the single piece of tape folded as'described, the fastener used therewith coacting with the end'portion of the tape to insure permanence in adjusted position. It is, of course, clear that the grip. may be made in various sizes and lengths and that the particular size and material of the tape may be widely varied and that fasf teners other than that specifically described may be availed of without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
1. A waist grip made of a tubular piece use.
of tape folded on itself for a portion of its length, whereby a reinforced portion is provided, the end of the tape beyond the reinforced portion having a fastenersecured thereto, the folded end ,of the reinforced portion being provided with a ring, the said piece oftape beyond the reinforced portion being adapted to be entered into the ring and brought into engagement with the said fastener, whereby it is held in position for 2. A waist grip made of a length of tubular tape folded on itself for a part of its length whereby a reinforced portionis pro vided, a fastener having openings therein, theend of the tape beyond the reinforced portion passing through the openings in the said fastener and being secured to one end of the reinforced portion, the'other end of thelreinforced portion being provided with a ring, that portion of the tape beyond the fastener being adapted to be passed through the said ring and brought into engagement with itself adjacent the fastener, whereby the device is held in position for use.
3. A waist grip made of tubular tape! folded back on itself for a part of its length, whereby a reinforced portion is provided, the folded end of the reinforced port-ion being provided with a ring, a fastener having openings therein, that part of the tape beyond the other end of the reinforced portion being folded and passed through the openings in the saidfastener and then secured in position to the reinforced portion, the said end of the tape beyond the reinforced portion being adapted to be entered through the said ring and wrapped around that portion of itself adjacent the said fastener, whereby the frictional engagement between the fastener and the said end of the tape hoids the article in position for use.
4. A waist grip made of tubular tape folded upon itselffor a part of its length whereby a reinforced portion. is provided and an unfolded cud portion is also provided, one end of the folded portion being provided with a ring, a fastener, the said unfolded end engaging the fastener and also engaging the, other end of the reinforced portion, the said unfolded end beyond the fastener being adapted to be passed through the said ring and wrapped around that por tion of the tape adjacent the fastener, whereby the frictional engagementof the fastener and the tape secures the article in position for use.
5. A.waist grip comprising a reinforced portion, a piece of tape extending'froni one end of the reinforced portion, a ring secured to the other end of the reinforced portion, a fastener, the saidtape intermedi ate of its length being folded and brought into engagement with the fastener the said folded portion being secured to the first end of'the reinforced portion, said tape being adapted to be passed through the ringand secured to thatportion of the tape adjacent the fastener, whereby the frictional engagement of the fastener with the tape holds the article in condition for use.
6. A waist grip made of a length of tape, one end thereof being provided with a ring, the intermediate portion of the tape being folded, a fastener secured to the folded portion, that part of the tape beyond the folded portion which forms the other end of the said grip being adapted to be passed through the said ring and secured to the said folded portion by being wrapped therearo-und adjacent the fastener, the frictional engage ment of the fastener and the tape holding the article in position for use.
7. A waist grip made of a length of tape, one end thereof being provided with a fastener, theintermediate portion of the tape being folded, a fastening device secured to the folded portion, that part of the tape beyond the folded portion forming the other end of the grip and being adapted to be passed through. the. said fastener and secured to the said folded portion by being wrapped therearound adjacent the fastening device, the frictional engagement of the fastening device and the tape holdingthe grip in adjusted position:
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
