messes.
- Be it known that I, JENNIE S. HE'rnN- GER, a citizen .of the United States, residing at Camden, in the county of Camden and State of NewJersey, have invented certaln new and useful Improvements in Sheet- Packing, of which the following. is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in sheet packing, the object of the inventlon being to provide a combined metal and fibrous packing which may be cut in varlous shapes and sizes, and'which Will be elasticand efliinvention consists in certain ciently perform the function for which it is intended. v
A further object is to provide a sheet packing which may be manufactured and' sold at a reasonably low price, and from which perforated gasketsand other forms of packing may be cut. I
With these andother objects in view, the novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims. l
- In the accompanying drawings: Figure'l is a plan view of the metal plate constitutf ing a part of my improved packing showing" the same in shape to receive thefibrous pack-' ing. Fig.2 is a view in section on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar'view section showing the packing with 'its fibrous; filling and in its final shape ready for the market, and Fig. 4 isa view similar to Fig. 3 illustrating a modification.
In forming my improved packing I firstshape a thin plate of sheet metal 1 so as to size 0 form pockets 2 in opposite faces thereof. Thiscan be accompllshed by passing the sheet between suitable die rolls ,and I have illustrated the sheet as having the pockets of general diamond shape with the walls at an angle to the edges of he sheet. The invention'ls of course, not

commodate considerable fibrous packing 3. This fibrous packing is of asbestos or other similar material, and. is located in the pockets in both faces of the sheet, and when the sheet is compressed, the walls 4 of the pockets are bent at an angle to the bottoms of the pockets as seen most clearly in Fig. 3. By thus bending the walls of the pockets, I not only form an eflicient lock for the fibrous packing, but I also provide an elastic connection between the bottom wall of one pocket and the bottom walls of the adjacent pockets so'that the packing is free to compress and expand, at the same time embodying inherent elasticity sufiicient to overcome considerable pressures. If desired, I may cut out the bottoms of the pockets as seen in Fig. 4, so that the fibrous packing constitutes the entire surface at both sides of the sheet except where the division walls come.
I do not limit myself to the particular particular fibrous packing which are combined as above set forth, nor do I confine my invention to the other details of construction, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit andscope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let- 'f. A sheet packing comprising bent metal sheet forming pockets, and fibrous packing in. the pockets, substantially-as described.
2. A sheet packing comprisingv a bent metal sheet having fibrous material emsubstantially as described.
3. A sheet packing comprising .a bent metal sheet having pockets in its opposite faces, and fibrous material in said pockets,
substantially as described." 3'
4, A sheet packing-comprising a bent metal sheet having fibercontaining pockets thBI'BlI1,flIld the walls of said pockets bent at anangle to the surfaces of the packing of the sheet,?substantially as described.
7 sheet of metal having pockets formed in its opposite faces, fibrous material in said Pockets, and the walls ofsaid pockets bent at an angle to the surface of the packing, substantially as described.
pockets lying flush with the surfaces of the 10 metal sheet, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JENNIE S. HETTINGER.
