DOOR-FASTENER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MIQHAEL Sorrms, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bayiield, in the county of Bayfield and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
The device which is the subject matter of the present invention is designed more particularly for securing the doors of graincars in closed position, and its object is to provide a device of this kind which will securely hold the doors closed and which can be easily operated to release the doors to enable them to be swung open. A plurality of sliding bolts is provided, and said bolts are connected to a single operating lever, whereby they may simultaneously be advanced or retracted.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, the application of the invention is shown in perspective.
Referring specifically to the drawing, 5 denotes the side wall of the grain-car, said wall having an opening for a pair of swinging doors indicated at 6 and 7, respectively. These doors are hung vertically to the sides of the opening to swing outward, and their free vertical edges meet when they are swung closed so as to extend entirely across the door opening.
On the outer face of the door 6 is an angle lever having one of its branches 8 arranged substantially vertical, and its other branch 9 substantially horizontal. The lever is fulcrumed at 10 to a bracket 11 carried by the door, and swings parallel to the face of the door. The upper end of the branch 8 works under a guide 12 carried by the door and is provided with a grip 13.
The herein described angle lever carries a plurality of sliding bolts for securing both doors in closed position. One of the bolts 13 is pivoted at 14 to the free end of the branch 9 and works up and down in a guide Specification of Letters latcnt.
Application filed January 15, 1913.
Patented Nov. 4, 1913.
Serial No. 742,232.
15 carried by the door 6. This bolt is adapt-ed to enter a keeper socket 16 on the door sill 17 of the car, adjacent to the door 6. Another bolt 18 is pivoted at 19 to the branch 8 near the upper end thereof and works in a guide socket 20 on the door 6, from which socket it is adapted to be shot forward into a matching keeper socket 21 on the door 7, said sockets being mounted on the respective doors at the meeting edges thereof. Intermediate its ends, the branch 8 carries a sliding bolt having two branches 22, said bolt being pivoted to the branch 8 at 23, and the branches 22 being provided each with guides and keepers E24: and 25, similar to the guide and keeper 20 and 21.
The several bolts herein described are advanced into their keepers by swinging the angle lever toward the door 7 and they are retracted by swinging said lever in the op posite direction. Thus, the bolts are operated simultaneously, and when advanced, the doors are securely held closed, the bolt 13 working at a right angle to the bolts 18 and 22.
I claim:
The combination with a door, of an angle lever pivoted at its angle to one side of said door near the bottom thereof to swing parallel to the face of the door, one branch of the lever extending in the direction of the Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents.
