GRAIN-SAMPLER.
To zZ/ 'whom it may concern.'
Be it known that we, WILHELM GRAUEN- rnLs, Josnr HEINRICH GRAUENFELS, and DAVID GRAUENFELS, the two former ones subjects of the King of Roumania and the latter of the King of Hungary, and residing the two former ones at Bucharest, Roumania, and the latter at Brass, Austria-Hungary, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grain-Samplers.
The sampling apparatus for` shelled corn according to the present invention comprises substantially two movable tubes, one in the other which are provided with apertures. The latter are, according to the respective position of the tubes, open or closed, and by sinking the tube into the corn the inner tube is filled with co-rn at different elevations.
In the drawing different forms of devices embodying the invention are shown.
Figure l is a side view of the apparatus. Fig. 2 is a vertical section. Fig. 3 is a partial section of the handle. Fig. t is a section on line I-H of Fig. 3, the pin n being in locking position. Fig. 5 is a section of the connecting parts on an enlarged scale. Fig. 6 shows half of a coupling device of a moditied form. Fig. 7 is a side view thereof. Fig. 8 is a section on line V-Vl of Fig. 10 of the second part of the coupling device. Fig. 9 is a side view of the modification shown in Fig. 8. Fig. l0 is a plan view oil the same. Fig. 11 is a section on line Ill-IV of Fig. 8.
The invention comprises a plurality of detachable tubular parts a, a, a which are provided longitudinally with openings b. XVithin each of the sections a is fitted with a very small clearance a second tube f with a similar opening so that said tube f according to its position opens or closes the apertures The inner tube f is provided with a number of partition walls c which are disposed in such a manner that they form chambers f according to the opening b, the upper sides of these walls k are inclined, so that the corn may easily run out through the apertures. The lower end l of one of the sections a terminates in a conical point. Any kind of coupling device may be employed to fit the tubular parts a, a. together.

resembling a screw cap. According to this coupling device, one end of a section a is provided with a thread e, while the adjacent end of another section is equipped with a flange e which is surrounded b\y the cap Z. The diterent tubular sections can also be connected by the aid of the coupling shown in Figs. 6 to 11, wherein a sleeve E surrounds an end of a section A which is provided on opposite sides with two depending extensions K having slots K', the other end of the tube having a sleeve E which serves to receive the extensions K and for this purpose is provided with two longitudinal and vertical recesses L and closing springs M with noses N. On the under smaller part E of the sleeve E is rotatably mounted a ring O having on its inner sides eccentrical recesses O. Owing to the position of ring O, as shown in Figs. 8-11, the noses N are ready for coupling and it is suicient to telescope the tubular part E, E, one into the other. it the ring O is turned about 900, the walls of the recesses O press the free ends of the springs M inwardly so that the noses N in the slots K prevent detachment of the parts E, E. The ring O is provided, according to Fig. 9, with a horizontal slot O allowing the entrance of a pin 0 which arrests the ring in the eXtreme end positions. When the sections a, a, a are` connected it is also necessary to connect the inner tubes f in order to guarantee their common rotation. ln the present form of embodiments, an end of one ot the sections f is provided with an angular extension h, while the adjacent end of another section has secured thereto a sleeve z' the bore of which is also polygonal.
A handle S, having bars c is provided which permits of rotation of the tube f to the left and of lowering the entire apparatus. The handle can be titted to each upper coupling half e of the tube a, but it must not only permit rotation of the inner tube f but also the whole device. In the present form the handle 0 has in its center part a hub s which terminates into a polygonal journal z and which therefore can be entered in any of the tubes f ln order to prevent the handle C from turning within the tube f, the upper end of the tube a, f, the sleeve 2' and the polygonal extension h are provided with corresponding openings m, m into which can be introduced a pin n. The latter is advantageously attached to the handle c by means of a chain o (Figs. l, 3 and 4).
The lowest aperture b must be situated quite near the end of the tube a in order to get even samples of corn of the deepest corn layer. In order to prevent the fingers of the user from being pinched when the openings g are closed, the upper part of each tube a is not. provided with openings.
The operation is as follows: The apparatus is inserted into the grain while the openings b are closed. The tube is turned in order to open the chambers k and the apertures Z) and the sections f and a are then locked in position by introducing the pin n. The apparatus is then rotated with the aid of the handle c so that the chambers f are filled with corn, the openings b are then again closed, the locking pin n having been removed fro-m the openings m, m', and the apparatus withdrawn from the grain.
We claim:
A grain sampler formed of end and intermediate inner and outer sections rotatable upon each other and having registering openings therein7 said inner sections having transverse partitions with inclined upper faces, coupling means for detachably connecting the adjacent ends of said sections7 means for rotating said inner and outer sections relative to each other, and means for locking said inner and outer sections in fixed position relative to each other.
