at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag ving to provide a simple, cheap and effective device for closing carrying or hanging bags made either of paper or textile fabric with the contents of the bag.

A further object Ofmy invention is to provide, a bag closure and carrier or hanger having flat or plane surfaces which may be used to print or impress thereon advertising matter, and having such end in view the bag closure and carrier is preferably made from a flat piece' of material as cardboard which will serve the purpose Welland admits of the article being manufactured at such a low cost that it may be given away by merchants. In the accompanying drawings which illustrate a preferred form of my invention, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the bag closure and carrier, Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 22. Referring to the drawings, a flat blank 1 .s cut or stamped to have a suitable marginal :onfiguration, preferably as shown with rounded ends and parallel sides; the blank )eing of such size as to admit of having formed therethrou h an opening 2 of such :ize as to provide or the passage of a part )f the bag and of the fingers of a persons land. The opening 2 is preferably oval and )elow the same is a smaller opening 3 which nay be of the same shape as the one above, ubstantially as shown by the drawings.

The blank with the openings 2 and 3 forms complete article of manufacture or sale .nd when made of cardboard the opposite lat surfaces may be printed upon so that he bag closure and carrier not only serves ts primary purpose, but may also be used as an advertising device. Instead of mak- 111g the device of cardboard it may be of wood or sheet metal and when of the latter material the advertising matter may be embossed upon the blank.

In practice the paper or textile bag 4, in which the merchandise or article has been placed is folded or crimped by grasping the neck thereof with the hand, the compressed or gathered-in end is passed through the larger opening 2 and then through the smaller opening 3, the bag forming a loop about the central part 5 of the blank. When the bag has been placed in engagement with the closure and carrier the depending end of the bag will be pressed against'the lower portion of the blank, below the opening 3 Patent-ed Now-25, 1913.

which tends to prevent the gathered end of the bag slipping so that the weight of the bag and its contents will be suspended by the looped portion contacting with the lower edge of the opening 2. The lower curved edge of the opening 2 causes the material to center and leaves ample space above the fold for the insertion of the fingers when used as a carrier, and when used as a hanger the device will center itself. By providing rounded or oval openings or apertures through the blank I avoid sharp edges which would be liable to cut the paper bag.

It will be noted that the shape of the blank or body port-ion of the bag closure and carrier or hanger may be varied as well as the shape of the openings, but in every instance it is desirable to have the lower aperture of a smaller size than the one above, therefor the design may be varied to accord wit-h the use or business of the user.

I claim 1. As a new article of manufacture, a bag closure and carrier comprising a flat one piece body portion that is provided with openings of different sizes the larger opening being of a size to admit therethrough the fingers of aperson and to provide above the opening a grasping portion the openings having between them a curved wall which separates the two openings.

2.
