To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J AKOB G. Knoncx, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in C-Glamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to C clamps, and it has for its object to produce a C clamp of simple and improved construction which may be conveniently adjusted as to length for the purpose of clamping material considerably varying in thickness without ne cessitating the use of a clamping screw of excessive length.
With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claim may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawing-Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved C clamp with dotted lines showing the screw carrying member tilted in the act of being adjusted. Fig. 2 is a side view of the screw carrying member detached. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the socket member. Fig. 1 is a sectional view of the socket member taken on the line 44 in Fig. 3.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.
The socket member of the improved clamp is composed of two side members or plates 1, 1 which are spaced apart at intervals throughout the entire length thereof by means of rectangular blocks 2, 2 secured by means of rivets 3. The spaced-apart ends of the plates 1 are unobstructed. The plates or side members 1, 1 are provided near their lower edges with forwardly extending lugs 1 between which a forwardly extending arm or bracket 5 is firmly secured, said bracket beingprovided with a clamping head 6. The upper ends of the side members 1, l are connected together by a strap or cross piece r plates.
The extension member consists of a bar 8 fitted between the spaced-apart side plates 1, 1 and capable of projecting at both the upper and lower ends thereof, said bar havlng at its upper end a forwardly extending arm 9 carrying a sleeve or socket 10 which is internally threaded for the passage of the clamping screw 11 having at its upper end a handle 12 and at its inner end a clamping head 13 which is preferably swiveled upon said screw in the usual manner. The front edge of the bar 8 is provided with a plurality of notches 1 L adapted to engage the blocks 2 of the socket member. The bar 8 is provided at a suitable distance from its lower end with a projecting pin 15 which by contacting with the lower edge of the cross piece 7 when the bar 8 is moved in an up Ward direction, will prevent the extension member from being completely detached from the socket member after the parts have been assembled.
In operation, the bar 8 of the extension member is accommodated between the side plates 1 of the socket member, the blocks 2 of which are accommodated in some of the recesses or notches 1 1. When adjustment for length is to be effected, the extension member is tilted with reference to the socket member, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the cross bar 7 being located in such relation to the uppermost block 2 as to permit such tilting to be effected. It will be observed that owing to the fact that the spacedapart side members 1, 1 of the clamp member of the socket member of the device are unobstructed at both ends, the range of adjustment of the bar 8 of the extension memher is limited only by the dimensions of the parts; it will also be seen that the device may be collapsed to such an extent that parts which are relatively thin, such as plates of sheet metal and the like, may be held and clamped securely together without involving the use of a clamping screw of excessive length, since the arm 9 of the extension member may be moved into very close relation to the arm or bracket 5 of the socket member. The extension member is now moved to the desired position, after which it is restored to a position with the arm or bracket 9 in approximately parallel relation to the arm or bracket 5, and with some of the blocks 2 connecting the rear edges of said in engagement with some of the notches let, thereby maintaining the parts securely in adjusted position, and enabling the clamp to be operatively applied without excessive adjustment of the clamping screw. It is evident that the tightening of the clamping screw will tend to force the notched edge of the extension member in the direction of and into active engagement with the spacing blocks of the socket member forming an extended surface to resist the tension of the screw and reducing the liability of breakage or accidental disassemblage of parts.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
A clamp of the character described including a socket member and an extension member, said socket member comprising straight side plates spaced apart throughout their entire length, the intermediate space being terminally unobstructed, and provlded near 1 their lower ends with forwardly extending lugs, a forwardly extending armsecured between the lugs and having a clamping head, spacing blocks secured between the side plates adjacent to their front edges, and a cross bar connecting the rear edges of the side plates adjacent to their upper ends; said extension member comprising a bar slidable between the side plates of the socket member and capable of projecting at both ends thereof said bar having notches engaging the spacing blocks of the socket member and a forwardly extending arm carrying a clamping screw In testimony whereof I atlix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
