COOLING-BOARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 12, 191-1.
Application filed April 8, 1912. Serial No. 689,1M.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, ALVAH \V. lhiowu and GEORGE W. Srnomm, citizens of the United States of America, residing a t Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in (loolingdioards; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to improvements in cooling boards for under-takers use, and its object is to provide a strong, foldable and portable structure adjustable for use in various respects, and to provide the same with various new and useful features hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Our device consists essentially of two frames hinged to each other, one of which is provided with a fixed top and the other with a top fixed in part and adjustable in part to various inclined positions, and foldable and adjustable legs adapted to fold within the frames, the frames being adapted to fold opposite each other and form a closure for the legs and adjusting means whereby the device when out of use is in compact form and convenient for transportation, and in various features of construction and arrangement as will hereinafter more fully appear by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective of a device embodying our invention as it appears when opened out for use; Fig. 2 the same as it appears When closed for transportation or storage; Fig. 3 a longitudinal vertical section of the same with one end adjusted as for use and the legs at the other end folded; Fig. i a detail in inverted plan view with the legs folded; Fig. 5 a vertical section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 6 an enlarged detail of the pivot for the legs shown in vertical section.
Like numbers refer to like parts in all of the figures.
The main frame of the structure consists of two rectangular frames 1 and 2 of substantially equal dimensions and hinged to each other, as at 3, to fold opposite each other or to turn into alinement and in the same plane. Attached to the upper side of the frame 1 is a top 4: of any suitable fabric or material, and a portion of the frame 2 adjacent the frame 1 is provided with a similar top 5 to which is hinged an adjustable top 6. These parts 4, 5 and (3 constitute a suitable support for the body when opened up for use and constitute the, outer opposite sides of the case when the device is closed, the edges of the case being formed of the frames 1 and 2. The portion of the top 6 is mounted on a frame 7 pivoted to the fixed portion 5 of the top, and the frame 7 is foldable within the frame 2 with the portion of the top 6 in the same plane as the portion 5, as shown in Fig. 2. The frame 7 is adjustable for use at various inclinations by props 8 having a series of notches therein to engage a support 8" within the frame 2 and to slide through the support to a position substantially parallel with the frames when the frame 7 is folded within the frame 2.
22 is a hook to detachably hold the frame 7 within the frame 9 represent two pair of tubular legs each pair connected at the top by a tubular cross member and pivoted within the respective frame near the respective outer ends thereof by means of plates 17 secured to the frames and having pivot pins 16 secured thereto and projecting Within the ends of the tubular cross members 15. The legs 9 and the member 15 are secured to each other by suitable Ts 18. Near the lower end each pair of legs is connected by a tubular cross member 10 secured to the legs by suitable Ts 19 and in this tubular member are sliding fasteners 21 to engage telescopic extensions 11 of the legs 9 and hold the same adjusted, the details of which fastener are not herein claimed and are not shown.
he lower end of the extensions 11 are connected by a bar 12 (preferably tubular) secured at each end to the extensions 11 by suitable Ts 20. When turned to operative position the legs are held adjusted by braces 13 having rule joints therein whereby the braces will fold and permit of foldingthe legs within the respective frames. These braces are pivoted to the inside of the frame at one end and to the outer side of the leg at the other end.
The structure shown is light and strong, and when folded is readily carried by means of a suitable handle 14 attached to one of the frames and is quickly adjusted for use with the frame 7 suitably inclined to support the head and the frames 1 and 2 in alinement and adjusted as preferred either horizontal or inclined by adjusting the telescopic ex tensions 11 in the legs 9.
What We claim is:
A cooling board comprising tWo frames hinged to fold opposite to each other and to turn into alinement, plates attached to opposite inner faces of each frame, a pin fixed and held by each plate, a tube connection between opposite pins and in the ends of Which tubes the pins fit and on which pins the tubes are rotative, legs connected to each tube atthe ends of the tubes adjacent said 5 pins, and foldable Within the respective frames, and foldable brace connections between each frame and the corresponding legs.
In testimony whereof We aiiix our signa- 20 Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
