SKIRT-MEASURING TAPE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 6, 1913. Serial No. 740,444.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD C. WVA'rTnns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skirt-Measuring Tapes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a skirt measuring tape, and has for its principal object to provide a device of that class comprising an adjustable waist member for securing the measurement of a waist band, together with hangers which are adapted for adjustment on the waist member and for securing the length measurements of different parts of the skirt.
In accomplishin this object I have provided the improvecIdetails of structure hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure I is a perspective view of a skirt tape constructed according to my invention. Fig. II is a perspective view of parts of opposite ends of the skirt member, illustrating the finger grip on one end of said member. Fig. III is a perspective view of the opposite side of the finger grip portion of the waist member.
Referring more in detail to the parts 1 designates a tape of suitable material, but preferably strong cloth, having the usual inch and fractional graduations, and pro vided at one end (that bearing the higher graduations) with eyes 2+3, the eyes 2 being located at the inch markings and distinguishable from the eyes 3, which are located at the fractional markings, by color or shape in order that an operator may more readily distinguish the markings when the figures are worn or when working with a poor light. The opposite end of the member 1 (that having the smaller graduations) is provided on its inner face with a hook t which is adapted to take into the eyes 2-3 to hold the member 1 about the waist of a person being fitted, and having a finger hold 5 on its opposite face to facilitate the tightening of the band about the waist of such person.
The hangers (3 comprise ordinary tape measures, which are also preferably constructed of cloth and have loops 7 at their upper ends supported from the waist member 2, the loops being loose on the waist member in order that the tapes may be moved t-hercabout to enable the operator to take the measure of the skirt at any desired point, the tapes (3 having the smaller graduations at the top so that the measure may be secured from the waist down irrespective of the length of the skirt, short ends of the looped parts of the tape measure lying along the outer faces of the bodies of the tapes, in order to provide a smooth surface against the skirt and waist.
In using the device, the member 1 is applied to the waist of a person being fitted and the hook t applied to the proper eye 2 or 3, the hook end of the tape being preferably provided with a cap 8, the edge of which marks the proper graduations on the eye to designate the waist band measure. With the waist member in place the hanger tapes (3 are adjusted to the sides, front and back to secure the measurements over the hips and the front and sweep measurements, the small graduations being directly at the waist band, so that it is only necessary to note the measurement for the bottom of the skirt at the lower ends of the hanging tapes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
A tape comprising at waist member, having measurement designations thereon, and having fastening devices at major measurement points and different fastening devices at minor measurement points, and a fastening device at one end of the member adapted for cooperation with the other fastening devices.
In testimony whereof I allix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
