UNTTED sTATEs PATENT orf-Fica.
ALvAN is. BROWN, or BENTON nieren., MICHIGAN. l
\\\\ f .r/ ToaZZ whom t may concern Be it lmown that It ALVANv B. BROWN, a
citizen ofv the United States, residing at Benton Harbor, Michi an, have invented certain new and usef rImprovements vin Sprayers, off/which the following is a specifi'cation.
This improvement relates to ,improvements in sprayers.
My f'mproved sprayer is .,fspecially de-k signed by me for use in spraying fruit trees and the like Where the spray is directed by the operator on the ground or on -a Wagon or spraying machine. n
The main objects-of this inventionare to provide an improved sprayer" in which the character of the sprayer may be changed Yat will, which is very effective and at the same time simple and economical in structure, durable in use and notl likely to Abecome clogged.
Further objects, and objects relating tov structural details will delinitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devicesand means described in the following specification.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure I is a detail side ,elevation of a structure embodying the features of my invention. Fig. II is a detail longitudinal section through the sprayer head. Fig. III is a transverse section on a line correspond- .ing to line 3)-3v of'4 Fig. II. Fig. IV 'is a detail section on a line corresponding to a line 4 4 of Fig. I. i In the drawing similar refe'lencc characters refer to similar parts throughoutvthe several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows atthe ends of the section lines.
.Referring to the drawingv the delivery pipe l is of suitable size and length for the convenient .manipulation of the sprayer, it constituting'a handle and being in'practice I.Visually about eight i'eet in lengthy and connecte'd tothe source of supply under' pres-v sure orto a force pump by means cfa iiexi ble pipe tube 2. The 1pipe l is provided Specification of Letters Patent. i l/ Application filed June 5, 1913.y Serial No. 771,881.

with a-.valve 3 at.its lower end. The'sprayer head or body is elbow shaped so that V`its face or tip 5 is directed. laterally. The face or tip member 5 is provided. with a threaded flange 6 .threaded upon the body.. The tip 5 `has a central delivery orifice 7. A disklike plate 8 is arranged Within the body, it being supported by the lannular shoulder 9.
The tipmember and plate are supported in a spaced relation by means of a gasket 10 which 'not only spaces the members to provide the chamber `11, ybut also seals the joints. `'Ihe member 8 is provided 'with delivery passages 12 disposed to deliver at 'an angle into the chamber 11, which causes tially at right angles withv a longitudinal y axis of the pipe l, ,Which is threaded into the inner end of the nozzle head or body 4,
as shown in Fig. II. The lvalve stem -17 is arranged through theinner end of the body 4 and provided'vvith a 'packing lgland 18. The valve stein 17 is in the form of a rod and is disposed parallel to the pipe 1. The valve stempasses through the' guide 19, which also serves as a support for the valve return spring 20, lthe upper end of the spring "being, connected with the valve through the Washer 21 and Cotter pin 22. The valve actuating lever 23 is pivotally mounted on the pipe l by means of the clip 241 and is ivotally connected with the valve stem by tlie pivot 25. When the valve 16 is opened theliquid is admitted directly to the orifice 7, which changes the character vof the spray someivhat and delivers it far- --ther from the nozzle.
The arrangement of the valve seat in the manner `shown and described enables the disposition of the valve stem parallel to the pipe, so that the stem is reciprocated with little strain or wear on the same or its bearings and packing in the head. This is of decided advantage as efforts have been made to operate valves with the stems disposed at an angle to the pipe, .which soon Wears the parts so that the liquid escapes and-is thrown into the face of or on to, the per. 'sin of the operator, which is very disagreea le;
l. My improved sprayer is simple and economical to produce and at the same time is veryeliieient and durable in use, and is not likely to become clogged.
