To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES L. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Augusta, in the county of Richmond and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Dilators and Catheters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined urethral bougie or dilator and catheter, its main object being to provide an instrument which will subserve the functions of separate instruments usually employed for the purposes.
A further object of the invention is to provide an instrument of the character described which is eflicient for both of its intended purposes, and which is simple of construction, convenient of manipulation and adapted to be readily cleansed and maintained in an aseptic condition.
The invention consists of the features of construction combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the closed instrument. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same with the jaws thereof spread. Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are vertical transverse sections on the lines 8-3, 4% and 55 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. '7 is a top plan view of a slightly modified form of instrument.
In carrying my invention into practice, I provide an instrument comprising a pair of members 1 and 2, which may be arranged in superposed relation, as shown in Figs. 1 to 6 inclusive, or side by side, as shown in Fig. 7 These members are pivotally connected, as at 3 intermediate their ends to provide a pair of jaws l and handles 5. The instrument as a whole is longitudinally curved, in the usual manner, and the forward ends or the jaws are bent or curved upwardly, while the handles are bent or curved downwardly. A bowed leaf spring 6 is provided between the handles 5 adjacent to and immediately in rear of the pivot 3, and acts to hold the handles normally spread and the jaws normally closed. One end of this spring is seated in a recess 7 in the lower handle, while the opposite end of the spring is fitted to work loosely in a recess 8 in the other handle.
For the purpose of adjusting the handles to open and close the jaws 4:, I provide one of the handles with a threaded opening 9 and the other handle with a slot or opening 10. Through the slot or opening 10 extends an adjusting screw 11 which works within the threaded opening 9, whereby the handles may be moved together against the resistance of the spring to spread the jaws 4 apart for a dilating action.
In accordance with my invention, the jaws are longitudinally tapered from the pivot toward their forward or introduction ends, and said jaws are provided in their meeting faces with longitudinal channels or grooves 12, forming a longitudinal passage. The side walls of these grooves are provided with notches, arranged in advance of the pivot and adjacent the rear ends of the jaws, at a point where the instrument projects from the organ when inserted for use. These notch-es are adapted to register to form lateral passages for the discharge of the secretion when the device is employed as a catheter.
It will be seen from the foregoing description that the invention provides a simple form of instrument which may be used as an ordinary bougie or dilator, and which may also be used as a catheter, thus providing a single instrument adapted to perform such functions. It will also be seen that the device is simple of construction, capable of being conveniently manipulated, and also capable of being readily cleansed and maintained in an aseptic condition.
