Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, Jesse LINES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sabetha, in the county of Nemaha and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful 1m provements in Seed-Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to cases or cabinets, and more particularly to the class of seed cabinets, boxes or the like.

The primary object of the invention is the provision of a cabinet, box or the like wherein the seed pockets which are adapted to receive packages of seed are hung upon supports or levers so that 011 the closing of the ease containing the seed pockets the same will be brought to position for sustaining the packages of seed upright, and also on the raising of the lid of the case the pockets will be disposed in step-like manner for sustaining tho packages of seed upright whereby they may be displayed in a convenient manner.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a cabinet of this character wherein the packages of seeds will be held within pockets arranged in series and adapted to be disposed in step-like manner when the case or the cabinet is opened, and also which will be lowered into the body of the case on the closing of the lid or cover so as to sustain the packages of seed confined within the respective pockets containing the same for the holding of the packages upright during the shipmentor transportation of the cabinet from one point to another.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a cabinet of this character in which the actuating mechanism is designed not only to operate the pockets or receptacles for the packages of seed, but to tem porarily lock the lid or cover of the case against closing by its own weight, thus permitting the display of the packages of seed when held Within the case, the pockets or receptacles for the packages of seed being held in such position in the case when the lid or cover is closed to sustain the packages of seed upright and against displacement from the respective pockets of the receptacle.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a seed cabinet of this character which is simple in construction, neat and attractive in appearance, enabling the best and most advantageous display of the said packages when held therein, and also which may be manufactured at a minimum cost.

l Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.

Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the cabinet closed. Fig. 41- is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the cabinet and trays, the said cabinet being closed.

Referring to the drawings by numerals, the cabinet comprises a box 5 of any desirable dimensions, comprising a bottom, a back, a front, two ends, and a hinged cover 6 which is adapted to be raised and lowered for the 0 )ening and closing of the box in the ordinary well-known manner. The box can be constructed from any material, and in this instance is shown constructed from wood, and the make-up of the box in its entirety can be varied should the occasion demand. The cover 6 has hinges 7, swingingly connecting it to the stationary part of the box, fixed to the back thereof. The hinges may be of any desirable type to assure the proper closing of the lid or cover, or the opening thereof.

Arranged within the box 5 are a plurality of trays, drawers or receptacles 8, which in this instance are shown as three in number, although it will be understood that this ,number is not essential and may be varied as the circumstances may require. These drawers, trays or receptacles 8 are subdivided by vertical partitions 9 forming a plurality of pockets therein, the number of divisions also being a matter dependent upon the needs or uses to which the box is to be put. However, the said pockets as shown will accommodate packages of seed for the display thereof when placed within the box and the same is opened. The trays, drawers or receptacles 8 are formed at their fronts with vertical walls 10, which. together with the rear walls 11 thereof are of uniform height respectively will be apparent.

The shifting mechanism comprises opposed pairs of bars or levers 12 and 13 respectively, which are arranged in parallel relation to each other and are adapted to move toward and away from one another. These levers l2 and 13 at intervals have mounted tierein pivots 1 1- which are engaged in sleeves 11 on the rear wall 11, and the bottoms of the trays, drawers or receptaclcs 8 so that the latter will move in unison and be sustained upri ht or perpendicular when bein shifted on the opening and closing of the box. When opening the box 5 the trays, drawers or receptacles 8 will be moved into different vertical positions so that they will stand each elevated a little above the other for the better display of the contents thereof, and in this position the levers 12 will contact and rest upon the levers 13, thereby preventing the displacement of the trays, drawers or receptacles 8, thus avoiding the lowering of any one of the trays or receptacles with respect to each other by accident or otherwise.

Pivoted to the end walls of the box 5 on the inside thereof are links 15 and 16, the latter being somewhat shorter than the former, and these links are in turn pivotally connected to the levers 13 at spaced points with relation to each other, so that the trays, drawers or receptacles 8 will move in unison to raised or lowered position, the links 15 being formed with slots 17 receiving the pivots 1S connecting them to the levers 13 so as to permit slight play of the latter to permit the lowermost tray, drawer or receptacle 8 to rest upon bearing strip 19 when all of the said trays, drawers or receptacles 8 have been raised, and also to prevent the possibility of accidental lowering of the said trays, drawers or receptacles 8 into the box.

(lonnected to the cover 6 at opposite sides are chains 20, which are also loosely connected to the levers 12 so that on the raising or" the lid or cover 6 the levers 12 and 13 will be. thrown for moving the trays, drawers or receptacles 8 to raised position so that the same will assume a step by step arrangement when the box has been fully opened. On the positioning of the trays, drawers or receptacles 8 just described, the cover or lid 6 will be prevented from accidental closing by reason of the fact that the pivots 1S connecting the links 15 with the levers 13 will gravitate to the lower ends or" the slots 17, thus locking the shifting mechanism against movement. When it is desired to close the box it is only necessary to slightly raise the levers 13, thereby pulling the pivots 18 to the upper ends of the slots 17, whereby the lid can be swung to closed position and the trays, drawers or receptacles 8 lowered into the box.

From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and manner of operation of the device will be clearly understood, and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.

What is claimed is A cabinet of the class described comprising a body, a cover movably connected thereto, plurality of separated trays each having front and rear walls, the rear wall being of considerably greater height than the front wall, sleeves formed at the upper edge of each rear wall, levers arranged at opposite sides of the trays, pivot pins passed through the levers and the said sleeves for swingingly connecting the trays to the levers, links pivoted to the body, levers pivoted to the links and also pivoted to the trays to extend parallel with the first-named levers, chains connected to the cover and connected to the first-named levers intermediate the ends thereof, and a bearing strip mounted on the bottom of the body and engageable by the lowermost tray for supporting the same on the raising of the trays in stepped relation to each other when the cover has been lifted.
