Description

4tion of the invention below the line a: x.
RANSOM MONROE, 0F HENDRIGKS GREEK, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 109,926, dated December 6, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT |l\l TUiRBlNE WATER-WHEELS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RANSOM MONROE, of Hen, dricks Greek, in the eonntyofLuzeru'e and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsiu Turbine Tater-Wheels. of which the following is a specification.
Nature mul Object of the Intention.'
My invention relates to an improvement in turbine water-wheels, and consists in constructing a waterwheel with spiral issues, the upper diameter' and the issues at the topof thewheel being greater than the Description of the Drawing.
Figure l is a vertical transverse section of the invention, cutting through the lines y y inlig. 2, and
showing the portion above the lines y y.
Figure 2 is a horizontal transverse section, euttini;r through the line :t a; in fig. 1, and showing that por- Genera-Z Description.
The wheel A has its bearings in -the beams f and g.: Its diameter is about two inches greater at its top h than at its bottom t.
l lhe issues B are about one inch larger at the top than at the bottom ofthe wheel A.
The sills o, uprights p, girders q, and cross-beams fr, compose the frame-work which supports the 'wheel A and a portionof the iluine C.
dis a covering placed over the flume C.
o are key-bars that pass between the girders q and the Covering d, to prevent the water from pressing the covering l against the shoulder 7.1.
.lhewheel -is really a screw, and the Iweight ot' water resting on the screw gives it more power than the force of the water does. v
The issues being,` the full length of the wheel, the water is in full force the full length ofthe wheel being smaller at the bottoni than at the top causes a lirnr pressure ofthe wat-er on the paddles4 between the issues.
The ykey-hars e and the covering d can be removed and the wheel taken out for repairs when necessary.
Claims.
I claim as lmy invention- 1. lhe Water-wheel A, Whose diameter is great'- er at thev bottom than at the top, 'provided with spiral issues Bv B, relatively larger at thetop than at the bottom, thus preserving the outer periphery of4 the buckets `in a perpendicular line, substantially' as and for the purpose set forth.
2. 'lhewheel A, provided with shoulder It, in com# bination with coverings d d, and key-bars e' erall arranged as and for the purpose se't forth. In testimony that I clairn the foregoing improvement in turbine-wheels, as above described, I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 13th day of July, 1870.
lVitnesess: RANSOM MONROE. [n s.]
