DAVID McAUSLIN, or DUNEDIN, NEW ZEALAND.
Door AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 23, 1914.
Application filed January 2, 1913. Serial No. 739,804.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID MOAUsLIN, bootmaker, a subject of Great Britain, residing at No. 40 Dowling street, Dunedin, in the Dominion of New Zealand, have invented new and useful Improvements in Boots and the like, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a boot which may be easily detached or slipped from the foot in case of an accident or in the event of the boot being jammed.
Another object is to provide a substantial ankle protector covering the elastic inserts in the upper.
My invention is particularly applicable to that type of boot which is known as the Derby or Oxford and is generally used by shunters, pointsmen and guards in the railway or tramway service.
There have been numerous accidents owing to the fact that the present style of boots prevents the wearer freeing himself in time when his foot becomes caught or the boot jammed in the points or crossings, and where ordinary elastic sides had been used it was discovered that they were not strong enough to protect the ankles from injury when it was necessary for the shunters to run about the yards; my invention overcomes these defects.
In the accompanying drawing, the single figure is a perspective view of a boot or shoe having the invention applied thereto.
Referring to said drawing 1 indicates, generally, an ordinary boot or shoe, the upper 4 of which is provided at opposite sides with gores 3 of elastic material, these gores extending down to the quarter 5 and being securely attached thereto. To protect the ankle of the wearer, each gore is preferably covered by a strip 6 of sole leather which is arranged exteriorly of the upper and is stitched at each of its vertical edges to a strip 7 of pliable leather. The pliable strips 7 are folded accordion-, or bellows-wise, as shown, and are preferably stitched at their inner edges to the same seams that attach the gores to the upper, in order to permit said gores to stretch when the boot or shoe is being withdrawn. The sole-leather strips 6 are held in approximately flat position against the boot or shoe by means of tabs 8 which are secured at their outer ends to the upper edges of said strips, and at their inner edges to said gores.
I am aware that boots have been manufactured with a narrow insert or gore of elastic reaching from the top of the upper to the quarter, but this style of boot does not meet the requirements as by reason of the position of the gore a pull is exercised on the instep, making it extremely difiicult to detach the boot quickly; and moreover this style of boot has hitherto been made Wlthout a complete quarter, the gores extending well below the ankle and, hence, affording no support. My invention overcomes these defects by reason of the gores being of sufficient width and length to allow a springiness or play immediately any pressure is brought to bear on the boot for the purpose of removing same; at the same time gives ample support, as the quarter is intact and in no way interfered with by the gores. The invention by reason of its being let into the upper at the part mentioned does not have a tendency to cause the boot to wrinkle and thus lose its shape. The boot can be laced or buttoned in the ordinary manner, but it is preferable that the laces be tied in front instead of being wound around the ankle. It has been found by experiment that should the boot become jammed a slight gwist or pressure will be sufficient to free the oot.
\Vhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A boot or shoe having an elastic gore inserted in its upper and extending down to the quarter, in combination with an ankle protecting strip of sole leather disposed upon the outside of the upper and covering the said gore, strips of pliable material connecting the corresponding vertical edges of said gore and sole-leather strip, and means for holding said sole-leather strip approximately fiat against said upper.
2. A boot or shoe having an elastic gore inserted in its upper and extending down to the quarter, in combination with an ankle protecting strip of sole leather disposed upon the outside of the upper and covering the said gore, strips of pliable material connecting the corresponding vertical edges of In testimony whereof I have signed my said gore and sole-leather strip, and a tab name to this specification in the presence of for holding said sole-leather strip approXitwo subscribing Witnesses.
inately fiat against said upper connected at DAVID MCAUSLIN. 5 its outer end to the upper edge of said sole- Witnesses:
leather strip and at its inner edge to the up ROBERT PARK, Jnr.,
per edge of said gore. H. W. SUTHERLAND.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents. Washington, D. G.
