INTERCONVERTIBLE COVERLET .AND WRAPPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
I Patented July 7, 1.914,.
Application mea February s, 1913. serial no. 146,350.
To all l'whom t may concern Be it known that I, IDA MARIE MAXIMI- vLiann ERNESTINE I-IBNER, a. citizen of 'the German Empire, and residing at 13 Frstenstrasse, Dresden-A., Kingdom of Saxony Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Interconvertible Coverlets and Wrappers, whereof the following is a specification.
The object of the present invention is to provide a coverlet for a Couch, cot or bed, chiefly for hospitals, sanatoriums and the like, which coverlet will not 01111501 completely Cover the'patient, when recum ent, and at the same time also allow of his free movements, particularly of his arms, but will besides allow of being used as a garment by the patient when he rises.
The advantage obtained by the Coverlet according to the present invention consists in that the patient is not only covered in a hygienically satisfactory manner, while he is lying in bed, but that the changing from a. recumbent to a standing position may be effected without danger of his cooling down or the necessity of his having to Change his 'arments The obj ect of the presentinvention is obtained by providing a Coverlet having an opening for the neck of the patient with slits through which he may pass his hands, and with Covering means such as sleeves or lapels over these slits. When the coverlet has a counterpane, the sleeves are formed by tubular attachments on the inner (under side of the counterpane, and these tubular attachments are then drawn through the slits in the coverlet and slits in the upper side of the counterpane. The arrangement may, however, also be such,'that both the Coverlet and also the Counterpane are provided with sleeves.
Fiure 1 represents a longitudinal section bf this invention in its preferred form havino' sleeves which adapt 1t for`use as a wrapper and provided with a sleeved covering which serves as a counterpanewhen the device is used as a Coverlet. Fig. 2 represents a similar section in which the sleeves are omitted from the body of'the Coverlet or garment. Fig. 2a shows an enlarged view of the sleeved connection of the counterpane shown in' Fig. 2. Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal section of the garment coverlet, the Covering shown in Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 being omitted and the neck Vbeing provided with a b1b Iand thepocket with a detachable linmg: Fig. 4t, represents a plan or front elevation'o the device in the form of a coverlet. F1 4 represents a plan of a fra ent o f the ody a showing a scye slit'tleliein covered by a lapel. Fig. 4b represents a transverse section thereof. Fig. 5 represents a longitudinal section of one form of the garment Coverlet. Fig. 6 represents the lnterconvertlble garment coverlet for use as a wrapper in sitting position. Fig. 7 repesents the same for use in standing posiion. The same reference characters indicate Correspondingparts in the different gures. The body a of this garment coverlet is made of Camelhair, wool or other suitable material and is 4preferably bound with a braid b. This body is provided at one end,
preferably about midway of its width with a longitudinal slot al extending downward or inward a substantial distance from the upper edge of the body and provided at its inner end with an enlargement 0. This slot divides the upper end of the body and forms on opposite sides thereof two substantial back wings e, which when the article is used as a wrapper or garment extend over the shoulders and across and down the back forming a lung protector.v The enlargement at the inner end of the slot d constitutes in such use a neck opening disposed a lsubstantial distance below the top of the body.
Means are provided for fastening the back wings or lung rotectors inv wrapping position over the s oulders and down the back. The means herein shown are two snap buttons parts g of which are located at the outer Corners of said shoulder wings and the counterparts g adjacent to the neck opening-C. Means are also provided for folding upward and suspending around the waist the lower end of the body a when it is used as a garment for the patient in standing position. The means shown for this purpose comprise two holes o at the lower corners of the body a, ya loop 02 on the inner face thereof, and a'pwaist cord or belt 0. threaded through said holes and the loop and adapted to encirclegthe waist as indicated in Fig. 7. The body a is also provided below the shoulder Wings e with two slots f which constitute seyes for the passage of the arms. Means are provided for j lA coverlet bo or 1ape1s"g'- .as lshown in Figs. 4* and 4". a The sleeves; arel 'preferably f provided at their frontends ,with-means for preventingtheentrance of' cold air at the wrist, such-1 for instance as a gathering string It; Orr the coverlet, body 'a are Falso arranged pockets z', which 'may be provided with an vlexchangeable lining k. vThis liningis buttpnedto' buttons Z sewn to the coverlet'ir thepocket and may be exchanged .at any time, fand wlll prevent' thcov'erlet proper being* soiled by' andkerchi'efs,"sputum ou sforf-.the like placed in toythe Pockets." increasing the sa' l of some impe'rmeabliaa materia f furt'hen preparation, when the patientrise'all .that is4 necessary is to -pull'a cord 0"aro1'ind tliewai'st.
.Figs 4* :and 4b' illustrate the arrangement ofa-lapel g1I which is attachedto the slit Yf in' the coverlet, so" that -thisslit is entirely covered by the'said lapel whenthehands ory arms are not'passed throughlit, and thereby closed against, theentrance of cold'air and the like. The lapell mayv also; be provided with a "buttonhole 'buttoning over a button on the-'faveurs whereby a will be heldin I such closingposition.
lIn Fig. 2 'the body a is` provided with a cover 1t, lwhereof the inner face serves as a liningwhensaid body is used as a wrapper andjthe4 'outer or either face serves as a counterpanewhen the body is used as a coverlet.' -To the inner layer of the cover n Ais sewnla sleeve g. This sleeve is drawn from thepositionindicated by dotted lines ing Sla-inthe thronghlthe slit f and'through a correspondoutside of the cover n. For preventing thev4 sleeve from being drawn back, when the armis withdrawn, the sleeve is preferably secured to the edge of the slit of the outside of the counterpane. This may, for instance, be done by means of a i cord laced in a zig-zag `line vas shown in Fig.
' slit 2 through -the scallops of the counterpane and the sleeve respectively.' The sleeve will thus forma protection for the edge ofthe f in the coverlet, and these edges can therefore not .be soiled and infected by germs of the disease of the patient, waste products, sputum and the like, when he passes his hand and arm through the slit.
In Fig. 1 the coverlet body a and the cover both have sleeves. Here the coverlet a has a sleeve g, the cover n has a sleeve g1 attached to its underside, which sleeve is drawn through the slit f in the coverlet a and is folded over the edge of the sleeve g.l To the front side vof the cover n, is attached a sleeve g2, the front end of which is secured by suitable means, for instance knotting, lacing and fthe, chest section of is-folded over the edg o'r'yjstill `further i ety the-lining maybe made sputum. y as' herein'before described, which will entirelycover thepatient", while lhe is in a vrecumbent (position, may serv f e` as a the like, to the'folded over edge the coverlet body a is provided with a sort .of bib m at the neck. This bib is made of an impermeable material and is buttoned to the coverlet. Its edge e of the neck hole c, and buttoned on the lnside to the coverlet.
This bib will serve to protect the coverlet from being soiled by contact with thegpla-y tient is and prevent its being infected by v1 claim:
interc'onvertible coverlet and wrapper comprising a substantially;v rectangular bodyk adapted to cover a couc ,cot or bed `andv provided with yslits in its fupper art adapted v"to" constitute scyes and with an e ongatedslotextending a substantial distance inward or downward from theupper edge protected-against its being soiled,A
of said body and having an enlargement at its lower or inner end adapted to form a neck opening disposed a substantial distance belowi said upper edge, said enlarged elongated slot forming vwlngs on its opposite sides` adapted inthe use of the article as a wrapper` to constitute-back flaps extending downward over the back.
2. An interconvertible coverlet and wrapper comprising a substantiallyv rectangular -body adapted to cover a couch, cot or bed and provlded with slits in its upper part adapted to constitute scyes and with an elongated enlarged slot at its upper end adapted to form back covering wings and a neck opening, and means for supportin the lower end of said body at the front t ereof at the waistline and forming two front used as a wrapper, leaving free the feet.
An interconvertible `coverlet for a couch, cot or bed and 'wrapper comprising a substantially rectangular body adapted to cover a couch, cot or bed and provided with slits in its upper part adapted to constitute scyes and with an elongated enlarged slot at its upper end adapted to form back covering wings and a neck opening, and a cover corresponding in shape to 'said rectangular body and provided with scye slits and a slot corresponding with the slits and slot of said body, said cover being adapted to form a lining when the article is used as a garment and acounterpane when the article is used as a coverlet. v
