CALVIN N. RICHARDSON, OF WAVERLY, ILLINOIS.
STAPLE DRIVER AND FULLER.
Application filed January 15, 1913.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented An 4, 1914.
Serial No. 742,176.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CALVIN N. RICHARD- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vaverly, in the county of h/Iorgan, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Staple Drivers and Pullers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, c1ear,-and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention is directed to improvements in devices for driving and pulling staples or the like, and has for its object to so construct a device of this character that the driving and pulling of staples will be greatly facilitated.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is exceedingly simple in construction, durable and one which consists of a few parts, thus producing a device which may be manufactured at a minimum cost.
YVith these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:-
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. i is a similar view on line ki of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a tubular body portion having its upper and lower ends exteriorly threaded, and engaged by couplings 2 and 3, respectively. The coupling 3 is provided with a centralv bore 4. The cap 2 is formed with a central aperture 6, and through which the driving rod 7 projects and has its outer end formed with a head 8, said head being so fashioned as to provide a striking surface 9 and an extracting point 10. Engaged in the lower end of the bore of the coupling 3 is a pipe section 11, the upper end of which roduees an annular shoulder 5, the purpose of which will appear later, the lower end of which is flattened so as to provide a casing 12, which is rectangular in cross section,
and in which operates the driver 13. The driver 13 is rectangular in cross section, and as it fits within the casing 12 the same is prerented from rotating. To normally hold the driver 13 within the casing 12 and pipe section 11 a coil spring 14 is provided which surrounds the driving rod 7, said spring having its lower terminal engaging the annular shoulder 5 and its upper terminal the sleeve 15 which is fixed to the driving rod 7. The forward end of the driver 13 is formed with a cavity 15, the same being curved so as to conform to the bight of the usual wire staple.
In operation the staple 1G is inserted in the casing 12, as shown in Fig. 2 and positioned in proper respect to the post so that the line wire will be engaged in the oppositely disposed recesses 17 formed in the lower edge of the casing 12. It is then only necessary to strike the lug 18 a sharp suecession of blows with a hammer, thus causing the driver 13 to operate and drive the staple into a post.
hen it is desired to remove a staple the extractor point is engaged therewith, where upon striking the surface 9 a succession of blows the extractor point will be operated to effectually remove the staple.
WVhat is claimed is A tool of the class described, comprising a tubular body, a driving rod arranged to reciprocate therein, a sleeve carried by the upper portion of said rod, a coupling connected to one end of the body, a pipe section connected to one end of the coupling, said pipe section terminating in a casing, a driver upon one end of the driving rod and arranged to slidably engage in the casing, said casing being rectangular in cross section to prevent rotation of said driver, and a coil spring surrounding the rod and having one terminal bearing against the sleeve and the other terminal against the upper end of the pipe section.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
CALVIN N. RICHARDSON.
