v Specication of Letters Patent. Application led February 11, 1914. SeriaINo. S18-,033.
Patented sept. i5, i914.
To all whom it may concern.'
Beit known that I, JOHN B. DEs Rosmns, of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rho-de Island, a citizen of the Uni-ted States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cat-amenial Appliances, of which the following is aspecification.- 1
The purpose of my invention is to provide.
a simply constructed catamenial bandage which is readily adjusted to the person of the wearer, which automatically adjusts itselfl tothe movements of the wearer and which, by reason of its construction, cannot ohafe or cut.- A
Another object of my invention is to increase the convenience and eiiiciency of de` vices of this :character by providing for the entrance of ai-r inside the bandage to secure coolness to the wearer.
My invention consists' in the novel con-V struction and combination of the several parts of"my device, as will be hereinafter more fully setforth.
In the accompanying drawings like char acters of reference indicate like parts in all figures. l
Figure 1 shows my device in a comparatively-operativel position, with a convenient absorbent attached thereto. Fig. 2 shows a plan view ofthe interior side of one form' of my invention. Fig/3 is a -cross section on the line Y Y of Fig. 2 to show the construction. Fig. 4 is also a cross section of Fig. 2 on the line Fig. 5is a crosssection on the line Z Z of Fig. 1, showing fthe absorbent in place..
The body, 1, is made of any soft impervious material, preferably that kind of soft and thin sheet rubber known as velvet rubber and is made with 'a considerable degree of'` fullness. This bandage may-be made of any required length and width but is preferably considerably wider in' the front than in the.
back and tapers gradually toward the lrear. The front edge is reinforced by ahem, 3, of
some elastic material, preferably flat web-" bing, and is providedat each 'extremity with a catch, 8-l8, engaging` with the elastic straps, 7 7 permanently attached to or in prolongation of a hem or reinforcement, 12, at the rear end of the device, These straps are intended to pass around the waist of the wearer forming an elastic belt to support the device. a
The edges, 2 2', of the device as far as the points 10-10, kwhich distance is approximately two-thirds the .length 'of the bandage, are formed by drawing the edges of the body, 1, around and over a soft hollow elastic tubing, referably gum rubber, forming a soft, yielding and elastic cushion at the points .where these. edges touch the body.
These roundedges are soft and by fitting .l
snuglyagainst the wearers body form a moisture proof joint and greatly increase .the comfort of the wearer and the efficiency tend to hold, the iiat edges offthedevice .i
slightly away` from the person of the. wearer fory a short` portion'. of the last thipd of.its length, allowing the entrance of air inside ,"thebandage, which is highly desirable. e
At any convenient 'points' transverse strips or bands of flat elastic webbing, 9
11, cross from one edge to the other, being carried around each edge and fastened; these strips being free from the b ody,` 1, may be used for holding any. convenient absorbent, iat and smooth inside the body or container..v At the points 13, 14 and 15 Hat patches of non-elastic material are secured to the edge or surface of the body, 1, and carry a safety pin or other convenient fastening adapted to holding the absorbent firmly and smoothly on the interior surface other fastening .to touch the -body of the wearer, 0
A. great advantage ofthis bandage lies in the smooth cushioned edges, 2 2', which yield to the movements of the body andl .avoid friction or 4other discomfort at the same time promoting the efficiency of the device. Thesevare held in constant contact with the body of the wearer by reason of the tapering of the bandage from the front hem, 3, tothe points 10-10, where these round cushions cease. The body, 1,"bein`g firmly ofthe device, without allowing said pin or l ioo i'io
.attached yat its front and rear hem to the forward portion of said body; flat elastic` belt straps is yprevented from losing its normal shape and is held in a comparatively `flat and eiicient form. The flat hems, 6-
6A', being joined 'at the proper point hold the rearv third of the device slightly away from the person of the wearer, giving a chance for a circulation of air Without impairment of efficiency, thus making the device cool and comfortable.
The whole device may be easily removed for changing the absorbent, and being made of impervious material can be readily Washed and kept in a perfectly clean and sanitary condition.
I claim:
1. A catamenial appliance having a body of softpliable material, round tubular edges attached longitudinally to the sides of the edges attached longitudinally Vto the sides of the rearward portion of said body, ]oined in prolongation to vsaid round, tubular edges,
vvtransverse elastic strips connecting said round longitudinal edges and said flat longitudinal edges, free from the body; means for holding interior fasteners on said band; flat elastic lateral edges at each end of said band, one exceeding the other in length and means for connecting corresponding ends of said front and rear lateral edges to form a A i belt.
2. A catamenial ap liance formed of a band of pliable material, the front portion yof said band extending outwardly from the intermediate line of said band; round tubular cushibnson said outwardly extending forward edges; flat elastic edges attached laterally to the rearward portion of said body in prolongation of said outwardly. extending forward edges; transverse elastic strips connectingv said outwardly curved longitudinal edges and said flat longitudinal edges, said transverse stripsbeing -free from said band; means on the interior of said band to hold fastenings interior to said band; fiat elastic lateral edges at each end of said band, said front lateral edge greatly exceeding said rearward lateral edge in length, and means for connecting corresponding ends of said front and rear elastic lateral edges to form a belt.
3. Acatamenial appliance havingabody of soft, pliable material; round cushioned edges yattached longitudinally to said body; Hat elastic edges attached longitudinally to 'said body in rearward prolongation of said round cushioned edges; transverse elastic strlps connecting said round longitudinal edges and said flat longitudinal edges free from the body; inserts on the l interior of saidl band carrying fasteners; at lelasticlateral edges at each end of said band, one greatly exceeding the other in length, and means for connecting corresponding ends 0f sald lateral edges to form a belt.
In witness whereof I have hereunto sub.-v
scribed my name. this ninth day of lFebruary, A. D. 1914.
