ERNEST MACAUEEY WADE, OF ROCK FERRY, ENGLAND.
FOUNTAIN 0B, RESERVOIR PEN.
Application filed September 4, 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ERNEsT MAOAULEY, WADE, a subject of the King of England,
residing at 65 Cavendish Drive, Rock Ferry,
in the county of Chester, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Fountain or Reservoir Pens, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fountain or reservoir, pens, of the type which embodies a stylographic writing end, and has for its object to provide a safety stylographic means whereby said writing end may be retracted intoso as to be shrouded and protected bythe body or barrel of the pen, when not required for use.
A fountain or reservoir pen according to my invention is characterized by the following construction: There is provided within the pen body or barrel a rod or stem which is adapted to be projected. and retracted in any convenient manner, as for instance by means of an internal tube provided with a spiral slot, as commonly used in reservoir pens of the known safety type. At the lower end of said rod or stem is attachedeither directly or indirectlya needle, and also securedas by screwingto the lower end of said rod or stem is a stylograph pen section containing a tubular end or point through which said needle passes, which section may be provided with flats and/or one or more slots or apertures to permit of ingress of air to the pen. By adjusting said pen section on said stem the projection of the needle therefrom may be regulated. Said pen section may if desired be constructed of celluloid or the like transparent or translucent material in order that the ink within same may be rendered visible.
I will further describe my invention by the aid of the accompanying sheet of ex planatory drawings, which shows in Figure Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 29, 1914.
Serial No. 788,122.
1 in front elevation partly in section a pen construction, the outer barrel being shown in dotted lines, while Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the upper part detached.
In the drawing a represents a tube of vulcanite or other suitable material provided with a spiral slot 6, and 0 is a rod or stem having a pin 03 which projecting through said spiral slot Z) lies and moves within a longitudinal slot formed in the inner wall of the pen barrel, so that by the rotation of the top a which is integral with said tube a said stem 0 is projected or retracted. Within the lower end of said stem 0 there is formed a cavity or socket 0 in which is disposed the upper end of a rubber or vulcanite spring piece e to the lower end whereof is secured the writing needle 7.
g is a stylographic pen section provided with a tubular end or Fpoint it through which the needle f passes; the lower end of said section 9 is internally tapped with a screw thread 9 and adapted to screw on to the externally screw threaded extremity 0 of said stem 0. Said section 9 is provided with an air duct or groove 11 and ink slots 'or passages j. On screwing or unscrewing said section 9 on said stem 0, the extent of projection of said needle f from the writing end point h may be regulated.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is A reservoir pen comprising a barrel, an adjustable rod therein, a needle yieldably supported by said rod, and means adjustable upon said rod and embracing said needle adjacent the outer end thereof.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
