To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, KARL MGLLER, a subject of the King of Denmark, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tables, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to produce a light and durable table which may be folded or rolled into a comparatively small space for packing and transportation, and which when set up for use will be very rigid and strong. A table of this character is well adapted for use as a mess table for outing purposes, and as a table for sample rooms and other places or it may be used as a work bench by paper hangers or others where a portable device of this kind is desired.

In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a per spective of my invention; Fig. 2 is an end elevation; Fig. 3 is a perspective of my in *ention when the top is removed; Fig. i is a side view of one of the pairs of legs and its permanently connected parts, and Figs. 5 and 5 are details of the table top.

The support of the table comprises as illustrated two pairs of legs which are similar in construction, a detail description of one being suflicient.

2 and 3 indicate two legs constituting a pair, said legs being crossed and pivoted together between their ends by the pin 4:. l Vhen in extended position these legs are locked by the latch 5, to prevent spreading or closing, said latch being pivoted at 6 to the upper end of the leg 2 and hooked over the pin 7 on the upper end of the opposite leg. The upper ends of the legs 2 and 3 are mortised at 8 to receive the lower edges of side bars A. and B which are adapted to be disposed in parallel relation with the pairs of legs C and D, near the opposite ends or extremities thereof.

Each pair of legs is supported, in vertical position while the bars are horizontal, by means of guys 9 and 10 made of chain or other suitable means. The lower ends of the chains 9 and 10 are secured to the bars 2 and 3, near the pivot connection 4 while the upper end of the chain 9 is fastened to the side bar B by a separable connection made up of the hook 11 and staple 12, the latter being secured to the side bar. The upper end of the chain 10 is fastened to an anchor bar 13 which is secured in mortises 14: in the side bars. The ends of the anchor bar 13 are offset to form stops 15, which serve to assist in preventing the side bars from spreading apart. In use the upper ends of the legs of a pair are spread into open position and the latch 5 secured over the pin 7 The side bars are then placed in the mortises 8, the a11- chor bar 13 inserted in the mortises l4 and the hook 11 secured to the staple 12, and in this manner the pair of legs is held rigidly in upright position to the side bars while the latter lie horizontally. The same method of attachment and setting up of the table with the other pair of legs D is employed, its chain 9 being secured to the side bar B in the same manner as the chain 9 of the pair of legs 0. It will be noted however that the anchor bars 13 are placed outermost near the extremities of the side bars while the chains 9 are secured to the side bar B on the adjacent sides of the pairs of legs.

The side bars A and B are of similar construction, each consisting of a pair of sections 16 and 17 hinged together by the pivot bolt 18, passing through two of their adjacent end portions while the inner extremity l9 overlaps the body portion of section 16. This overlapping portion 19 of section 17 is adapted to be locked to the section 16 when said sections are extending horizontally, by means of a lock pin 20 passing through both sections and permanently secured to the overlapping portion 19 by the flexible con nection 21 to prevent the pin 20 from being lost when it is withdrawn from engaging position.

The top of the table E is designed to be rolled or folded into compact form so that it may be packed away in a small space for transportation or other purposes, and consists of a flexible sheet of material 29. made of canvas or other suitable material upon the surface of which a plurality of strips of wood 28 or other suitable material are glued or otherwise fastened. In this manner the top is made flexible or foldable and may be made very thin and light. It is adapted to be spread out over the side bars A and B which serve to support it horizontally.

To pack the table into compact form the top is first rolled or folded, the hooks 11 are disconnected from engagement with the side bar B, the anchor bars 13 are removed from the mortises 14, the latches 5 are swung down upon the sides of the legs 2 and the pins 20 are withdrawn from engagement with the sides A and B. The legs are then folded into the position illustrated in Fig. 4-, and the side bars are also folded,

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is I 1'.
