COMBINED HEAD AND JAW REST.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 16, 1915.
Application filed August 14, 1914. Serial No. 856,747.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, NELS P. S'rnNsHoEL, citizen of the United States, residing at Crookston, in the county of Polk and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Head and Jaw Rests; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to provide a combined head and jaw rest for use in laying out corpses and especially adapted for use in embalining.
To the above end, generally stated, the invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved device, supporting a head and resting on a cooling board; Fig. 2 is a view corresponding to Fig. 1, with the exception that only the head rest .of the improved device is shown; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the improved device, on an enlarged scale, some parts being broken away and some of the exposed parts being shown in section; Fig. 4 is a plan view of the improved device, as Shown in Fig. 3, some parts being shown in different positions by means of broken lines; Fig. 5 is a rear end elevation of the improved device, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, some parts being broken away and some of the exposed parts being shown in section; Fig. 6 is an inner end elevation of the improved device when the same is folded, as indicated by broken lines in Fig. 4; and Fig. 7 is a detail view, principally in section, taken on the irregular line w ac of Fig. 4, with one of the frame side extensions folded to its extreme inward position.
The numeral 1 indicates a frame comprising vertically spaced top and bottom plates, rigidly connected at their outer end. portions by an end plate. The top plate of said frame is bifurcated to form a slot 2, which extends outward from the inner end portion thereof. The frame 1 is provided with a pair of relatively long and narrow side extensions 3 having one of their ends mounted between the top and bottom plates of said frame and pivotally secured thereto by rivets s for horizontal swinging movement toward and from each other. T-shaped channels 5 are formed in the outer end portions of the side extensions 3 and the inner ends of said extensions are recessed at 6, the purpose of which will presently appear.
Removably and adjustably mounted in the frame 1 is a head rest 7, having a depending stem 8. This stem 8 is telescopically mounted in a tubular sleeve 9 which, in turn, is telescopically mounted in a socket 10, integrally formed with an annular base 11. On the upper face of this base 11 is formed a rectangular extension 12; The base 11 is slidably mounted between the top and bottom plates of the frame 1, rests on said bottom plate with its extension 12 projecting through the slot 2, and thereby holds said base 11 against rotary movement. with freedom for sliding movement longitudinally of said slot. Set screws 14 are provided for clamping the stem 8 in the sleeve 9, in difi'erent vertical positions, and for clamping said sleeve in the socket 10. in different vertical positions. The socket 10 is notched at 15 to receive the upper set screw 15. thereby allowing the sleeve 9 to be completely telescoped within the socket 10.
The recessed portions of the side extensions 3 afford a clearance for the base 11 and thereby permit said extensions to be folded into parallel arrangement, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 4.
Mounted in each side extension 8 for horizontal movement toward and from the head rest 7 is a cup-shaped jaw rest 16, having :1- depending stem 17. These stems 17 are telescoped into relatively long sockets 18, having rectangular bases 19 slidably mounted in the channels 5 of the side extensions 3. These bases 19 hold the sockets 18 against rotary movement but with freedom for sliding movements toward and from the head rest 7. Set screws 20 are provided for securing the stems 17 in different vertical positions within the sockets 18.
As shown, the improved device is mounted on the customary cooling board Y and the frame 1 and extensions 3 are provided with feet 21 which engage said cooling board and hold the device properlv positioned and against slipping thereon. Spring latches 22 are provided for independently locking the side extensions 3 in different angular adjustments with respect to the frame 1. As shown, each of these latches comprises a spring, mounted in a pocket 23 formed in the framel, having a finger piece 24 and a detent 25. These detents are adapted to enter any one of a'mul tiplicity of spaced perforations 26 in the respective side extension 3.
The head rest 7 is adapted to support a' head Z in different elevations and the cupsh'a'ped jaw rests l6are'adapted to engage the lower jaw, asshown in Fig. 1 and thereby hold themouth closed. It is important to note that the supports for the jaw rests 16-are inclined toward each other and also towardthe head rest 7 When desired, the headrest-7 and its base'may beentirely removed from the frame 1 and used without the jaw rests, as shown in Fig. 2. The head and aw rests are all capable of independent adjustments to support the head indifferent positions and are independently removable from the frame and side extensions, which facilitates in dressing the body. The cup shaped jaw rests 16 receive the corners of the lower jaw and'set the same to hold the m'outh closedand they do notleave any no-- ticeable marks on the body.
\Vhat I claim is:
1. The combination with a support, of a pair of adjustable" jaw" rests, mounted: on said support.
2..The combination Wltll' a support, of a 1 head rest mounted thereon, and a pair of adjustable jaw rests mounted on said sup port.
8. Thecombination with a support, of a vertically adjustable head rest mounted thereon, and a pair of vertically adjustable jaw rests mounted on-said support;
4. The combination with a support, of
a vertically adjustable head rest mounted thereon, and a'pair of vertically adjustable jaw rests mounted on said support, with Copies of this patent maybe obtained for freedom for movement toward and from-the head rest.
5. The combination with'a support, of a horizontallyand' vertically adjustable head rest mountedon said support, and a pair of of a vertically adjustable head rest mounted on said frame, and a pair of vertically ads ustable aw rests mounted on'said side extensions, for movements-toward and from said head rest.
9. The combination with a frame, having 7 a pair of angular adjustable side extensions, of a head rest mounted on said frame, a pair of jaw rests mounted on'said side extensions, and means for lockingsaid side extensions in different angular adjustments.
10. The combination with a frame, hav
H12 a pair of angular adjustable-side extensions. of a vertically adiustable head rest detachably mounted on said frame, with freecloth for horizontal adjustment longitudi nallv of said side extensions, and a pairof'i vertically adjustable jaw-rests mounted on saidside extensions. for movements toward and from said head rest.
11.: The combination with a'support, of a head rest mounted thereon, and a pair of vertically adjustable jaw rests mounted on said support with freedom for movement toward and'from'eachother and toward andfrom said head rest.
In testimonv'whereof I aiiix my; signature in presence of two witnesses.
NELS P. STENSHOEL.
