HUGH A. BARNARD, OF HOUSTONVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA.
PAPER BAG.
Application filed September 2, 1914.
T0 all -w/'iom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGH A. BARNARD, s citizen of the United States, residing at Houstonville, in the county of Iredell and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful' improvements in Paper Bags; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to ineke and use the same..
This invention relates to paper bags for mercantile purposes and one of the prin cipal objects of the invention is to provide a peper bag .having a sealing flap which can be instantly connected to the bog' to hold the contents therein without liability of leakage and which will obviiite the necessity of binding cord or string.
Another object of the invention is to provide a paper bag or sack having means for sealing the same, thus obviating the necessity for the use of binding` string or cord :md at the same time being easier and quicker to seul. than the paper sacks oi' ordinary `construction in present use. d
The foregoing and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a plan View of a blank for nnxking n paper sack in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a side view of the sack folded and the square bottom of the sack 'folded up against the side of the bag, Fig. 3 is :L sido View in which the sealing tongue is turned outward to Show the adhesive material upon the upper edge of the tongue .and the curved opening in the top portion of the body of the bag to prevent sticking, und Fig, 4 is a perspective view of the bag or snel( sealed.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates'tlie back portion of a square Specification of Letters Patent..J
bottom paper bag, said back portion being" folded on the lines 2 and the side portions 3 being folded on the line 4 and when the bug is folded flat the sides are folded inward on the line 5. The front flap portions of the bag :ire designated G and 7, the portion (l hztving n curved cut away portion 8 Patented Mar. 30, 1915.
Serin No. 859,858. l
forated line l1 when required for sealing.
The sealing tongue 1() is also cut away at the lower side as shown at 12.
The bottom portion of the bag has a. plain lower edge 13 and is folded along the line 14, while the sides of the bag are folded inward on the lines 15.l in the usual manner for bags of this constiiuction.
Vvrhen the beg is folded and opened up to receive the contents the sealing Hap 10 is in front of the bag and is provided with an adhesive substance applied toits upper end as shown :it a. l/Vhen the bag is folded the adhesive substance a will lie in the opening formed by the curved recess and will thus prevent sticking of the tongue to the body of the bag.
lVhen the granular or other material is `placed in the bag the tongue 10 is detached upontbe line 11 afnd thegtop of the bag is folded trnsversely into many"folds as is necessary to lie firmly on top ofthe obntents of the bag iindrthe tongue thenJ is moistened upon the adhesive surface a and connected lirmly over the fold .at the top and secured to the back of the bagas shown more clearly in Fig. Ll.
From the foregoing it will'be obvious that a paper bag made in accprdancewith this invention may be filled to a. point-neer the upper edge and with one or two folds trztnsversely of the upper edge of the bag sealing tongue 10 muy be passed over the folds and connected to the bag in amoment thus obviating the necessity of binding cord and at the sume time holding the bag closed against leakage.
V arious changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit and scope ofthe invention as defined in the claims.
lVhat is claimed is A paper bag having a sea-img tongue at the front thereof, said sealing tongue hay ing a free edge, and the opposite edge connected to the bag materiel by a line of detaching perforations, a portion of the front In testimony whereof I afx my sgxm` Ef the bgg `lpeng cut vay, andbthe sealing ture in prsssence GI two witnesses.
