CHARLES A. GARSKE, OF OMAHA, NEBRASKA.
INHALER.
Application filed July 2, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHAnLns A. GARsKn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inhalers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices for use in the inhalation of medicinal vapors and the like, as employed in the treatment of affections of the respiratory passages.
It is the object of my invention to provide in a device of this character a separate inhalant-holder for each nostril, means by which the holders may be retained in position for use during sleep or for extended periods of time, adjusting means for the retaining device so that it may be adapted to fit different persons, and means by which the inhalant-holders may be applied separately to the nostrils, either for temporary use or for use during a considerable period of time.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side view of a device embodying my invention, showing the same as applied for use during an extended time, and Fig. 2 is a front view of the device, a part thereof being shown in section.
In carrying out my invention I provide a pair of tubular inhalant-holders each comprising a cup 1 having an opening 2 in the bottom thereof, and a cap 3 fitting upon the open end of the cup, the upper part of the cap being oviform and having an opening 4: in the end thereof. The cap is fitted upon the cup so as to be retained thereon normally by the frictional engagement of the parts, but being removable to enable the medicinal agent m, such as crystals of menthol, to be placed within the holder. A pin 5 passes transversely through the cups 1 near the base thereof, and upon said pin adjoining the outer sides of the holders are secured collars 6. Between the holders a coil spring 7 is disposed around the pin, said spring being under compression and pressing the holders outwardly against the collars, so that while the holders may be rotated around the pin they will be frictionally retained in any position to which they may be turned. The ends of the pin 5 outside the collars 6 pass through longitudinal slots 8 in the lower end portions of the curved springs 9, and are threaded to receive the small knurled nuts Specification of Letters Iatent.

11. The springs 9 taper toward the upper ends thereof and at said ends are provided with pads 10 of suitable material, such as felt, which may be secured thereto by inserting the ends of the springs into the pads and curling said ends outwardly, as indicated.
In the use of the device the holders are partly filled with the desired medicinal agent, the same being employed in such form that air may pass through the holders from the openings 2 in the bottoms of the cups 1 to the openings 4 in the tops of caps 3, becoming impregnated with the inhalant during such passage. to be administered during sleep or for any extended period of time, the device is secured upon the nose by means of the springs 9, the oviform ends of the caps 8 being inserted in the nostrils, and the pin 5 being disposed at and secured by the nuts 11 in such a position longitudinally of the slots 8 that the pads 10 may engage the sides of the upper part of the nose, as shown in Fig. 1. Referring to said Fig. 1 it will be noted that the pads are placed high enough on the nose so that the pressure therefrom will be received upon the nasal bones, of which the outlines are indicated by dotted lines, and thus the pressure of the pads will have no tendency to close or to restrict the nasal passages.
When the inhaler is to be used only for a short time, the holders may be rotated upon the pin 5, so that the springs 9 will be in about the relation thereto indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1, the springs then serving as a handle for the holders. Should it be desired to use the inhaler for only one nostril, one of the holders may be rotated to the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, the other holder being inserted in the nostril and retained by the springs if the inhalation is to be continued for a considerable time, or, if for temporary use only, the holder at the dotted position being employed.
The holders each having its own separate chamber for the medicinal agent, difierent materials may be placed in the two holders,
'without interference with each other.
Now, having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the class described, a pair of inhalant holders, a pin extending transversely through said holders so that When the inhalant is 7 Copies. of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
each is rotatable about the pin, resilient retaining members, and means for connecting the pin to said members in varying longitudinal relations thereto.
2. In a device of the class described, a pair of tubular inhalant-holders, a frame having a pin extending transversely through the holders so that each of the same is rotatable about the pin, and frictional retaining means for keeping the holders in adjusted relations to the pin and frame. v
3. In a device of the class described, in halant-holders having end-portions adapted to be inserted into the nostrils, a member having threaded portions extending trans.- versely from the holders, springs having longitudinal slots therein through which said threaded portions extend, and nuts on the threaded portions for clamping the springs thereon in adjusted relations thereto.
4. In a device of the class described, a frame, inhalanttubes mounted thereon and adapted to be inserted into the nostrils,
means on the frame for engaging the upper bony portion of the nose to retain the tubes in the nostrils, and means for varying the length of the frame from said engaging means to the tubes.
5. In a device of the class described, a
frame comprising spring members and a transverse pln connecting said members, the
pinpassing through longitudinal slots in the sprlng members, means for holding the pin gagement with the collars, the pin having p} threaded portions outside the collars, longitudinally slotted flat springs having noseengaging parts at the ends thereof, the
threaded pin-portions extending through the slots in the springs, and nuts on said threaded portions adapted to clamp the springs against the collars.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto sub -v scribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
