Description

G. A. JOHNSON. PACKING FOR REFRIGERATOR DOORS.
APPLICATION FILED AUG.
rye/ZJa/wson. 7 BY ATTORA Y GEORGE A. JOHNSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO W. H. MINER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
PACKING FOB, REFRIGERATOR-DOORS.
Application filed August 13, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. JOHNSON,
a citizen of the United States, residing at a door packing of durable construction and efficient operation.
In the drawings forming-a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a cross section through the meeting edges of a refrigerator door and the surrounding wall of the doorframe, showing in cross section the packing device in expanded position embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view of a portion of the wall of the door frame surrounding the door with my door packing in position, but partly broken away to show the groove in the door-frame; Fig. 8 is a cross section taken at the meeting edges of the door and surrounding door-frame with the door in closed position, and showing in cross section my packing device compressed.
Referring to the drawings 1 represents the edge of a hinged door, the remainder thereof being broken away and not shown in the drawings, 5 a hinge securing said door to the door-frame 6. Within the face 7 of the door-frame, which is adapted to be met by and engage the face 8 of the door 4 upon the closing of the door, is provided a groove 9 extending longitudinally of the door-frame, and having a central projecting bead or ridge 10 and depressions 11, 11 at either side thereof. Within said groove 9 is mounted a spring 15 extending the entire length of the groove, the said spring having at either edge thereof a curved or rounded portion 12, 12, and being provided with perforations 13, 13 to receive means, preferably screws 14, 14, engaging the central portion of said spring to the head or ridge 10 in the said Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 15, 1915.
Serial No. 784,512.
groove 9. The said spring is adapted to compress on either side of said bead within the grooves or channels 11, 11 upon pressure being applied to the outer face of said spring.
A yielding material 19 is stretched across the said groove 9, and secured to either side thereof, the said yielding material 19 engaging against the spring 15, and preferably comprising a matting 16 and a canvas strip 17, the same being secured to the face 7 of the door-frame by suitable means, preferably the nails 18, 18.
Upon the opening of the door the packing device will assume the position illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing, the spring 15 being expanded, and the rounded or curved portions 12, 12 thereof forcing the yielding material 19 outwardly in a taut position. Upon engagement of the face 8 of the door against the yielding material 19 on the closing of the door the rounded or curved portions 12, 12 of the spring press the yielding material 19 against the face 8 of the door at points upon said face opposed to the rounded portions of the spring, the pressure increasing at these points along the rounded portion of the spring until the door is closed, and the rounded portions of the spring are compressed within the depressions 11, 11in either side of the groove 9, as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawing. Packing strips are unnecessary in my device, the pressure against the yielding material being exerted by the spring along spaced parallel lines, affording a tight joint between the door and door-frame.
Applicant hereby formally acknowledges that a broader claim to the spring support having spaced parallel lines of contact is contained and has been allowed in his copending application, bearing Serial Number 784,042, filed August 11, 1913.
I claim In a door packing of the character described, the combination with a door and an adjacent member having meeting edges when the door is in closed position, one of said edges being provided with a longitudinally extending groove, of a strip of flexible material bridging said groove, and
means for pressing said material outwardly longitudinally extending, central rib to I to thereby form a seal, said means compris- Which said spring strip is secured.
in an elon ated strip of s rin material seured in said groove, said strig of metal GEORGE N N having ourled edges extending along the en- Witnesses: tire edges thereof and in engagement with JOHN A. QNIAR'I'IVNKUS,
the flexible material, said groove having a g ELEANOR L. NASH.
