Description

PETER F. RANDOLPH.
Improvement in Polishing-Machines.
No. 114,341. edMay 2,1271.
Inventor UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. p
PETER I RANDOLPH, OF JERSEYVILLE, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENTdN POLISHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 114,341, dated May 2, 1871.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PETER I RANDOLPH, of J erseyville, in the county of Jersey and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Polishing-Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention consists in the combination of an elastic belt with a polishing-belt, the former being arranged to run independently of the latter, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawing is represented a side elevation of a polishing-machine constructed in accordance with the principles of my invention.
A represents a Wheel or drum of any suitable size or construction. 1) represents a pulley, the longitudinal face of which should correspond with the similar face of the drum A. '1) represents an elastic belt, which may be constructed of any suitable yielding material, rubber, however, being preferred. a represents the polishing-belt, which is entirely independent of the elastic belt which runs within it on the main druin A and an auxiliary drum,
\ as shown.
Power may be applied in any suitable manner, and any desired number and arrangement of pulleys may be used, the former of which may be concave, convex, or of other desired forms.
The marked advantage of this arrangement is that the elastic belt is kept cool by being permitted to revolve in the air.
In practice it has been found that when the elastic substance is applied directly to the wheel the intense heat generated by the frietion of the grinding-surfaces heats the rubbers and injures it.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination of an elastic belt with a polishing-belt, the former being arranged to run independently within the latter, as do scribed.
This specification signed and witnessed this 3d day of December, 1870.
PETER F. RANDOLPH.
