INVENTGR @wf/M W ITN ESSE S 7%/ By #0r/My) www m MM TINTTEU STATES PATENT @FFTQFL EDWARD M. SEGOB., 0F NEW YORK, N. Y.
MECHANICAL TOY.
Application filed July 25, 1914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD M. SECOR, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical lToys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to spinning or rotating toys wherein the color effect of a rotating body is automatically changed or lvaried during the rotation of the toy and preferably incidental to the variation of velocity, it also embraces means for enlarging the diameter of the rotating body during the rotation, and provides for securely housing the extension members prior to the cessation of rotation, whereby injury to the same is avoided.
In the illustrations, two embodiments of the invention are shown. One is a rotating body wherein but one side is exposed to view and is shown in the form of a top, and in the other both sides are exposed and is in the form of a disk which is caused to spin or rotate rapidly by the alternate stretching or slackening of twisted cords.
In the drawings accompanying this specification: Figure l is a plan view of a mechanism embodying the present improvements and is a representation of a top in rotation. The slides for effecting the enlargement of the diameter being illustrated in their extended position by dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the top shown in Fig. l, the extensible slides being illustrated in their retracted position. Fig. 3 is a crosssection of the top taken on a plane at about the line 3 3 of Fig. l. In this view the wings are shown in the extended position. Fig. 4L is a plan view of the top, the parts being` shown in the Fig. 2 position, and partly broken away. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the device in the form exposing both sides of the disk, the disk in this instance being supported upon twisted strings, which effect the rotation; and Fig. 6 is a cross-section of the spinning toy shown in Fig. 5, the extensible wings being shown retracted.
In both embodiments of the invention a spinning or rotating tov is illustrated which comprises a body portion formed of plates 7 and 8 fastened together in some suitable manner, preferably by means of a block 9, to which such plates are secured and which holds them separated one from the other.
Speccation of Letters Patent.
Patented July 6, 1915.
Serial No. 853,067.
These plates are preferably made of some light material, such, for instance. as cardboard.
In the space between the plates 7 and 8 there is shown, moinited, a pair of extensible slides or wings 10. Such wings are preferably made so that in their retracted position they will not extend beyond the outer periphery of the outer disks 7, 8. In the illustrations these wings l0 are held in their inward position by extension springs shown in the form of elastic rubber bands l1. The wings are shown as having notches or recesses at the meeting edges for surrounding the center block 9. The extension springs draw the wings against each other at the inner edges and also against the block 9, which serves to center them and stop each at its proper place upon its retraction. he body portion is carried by means adapted to impart rotating impulses to the body portion.
In the construction shown in Figs. l to 4f, namely, the top construction, this supporting means is in the form of a shaft l2 secured to the body portion in some suitable manner. Preferably there is a heavy plate 13 secured to the shaft, and the block 9 is secured to such plate. This shaft is provided with the usual pointed end l-i for engaging the supporting surface, and with a handle l5 for the engagement of the operator while drawing off the spinning string 1G.
In the construction shown in Figs. 5 and 6 the supporting means is shown in the form of a pair of twisted strings 17 passing through suitable holes 18 in the body portion. rIhe slides or wing members are guided in their movements and restrained from undue outward movement by coperative guiding faces carried thereby and by the body portion. Suitable studs 19 are shown passing through radially disposed slots 2O in one or both of the plates 7 and Sand secured to the slides or wings. lThese slots are shown of sufficient length to limit the inward and outward movement of the wings. When rotative motion is imparted to the body of the toy by the supporting n and rotating means, the rapid impulses immediately, by means of centrifugal force, throw the wings or slides outwardly against the resistance of the extension springs 1l, and thereby extend the diameter of the rotating body. As the velocity or momentum of the rotating body diminishes the centrifugal force will naturally diminish and the wings or slides will begin to respond to the influence of the extension springs 11 and bedrawn inwardly. Prior to the cessation of the rotation of the body portion the wings will be drawn entirely within thehousing alforded by the disks 7 and 8, which willk bring these wings to a place of security-in the case of the top, before the top falls over; and in the case of the toy carried by the two springs, before this is laid down by the operator. The studs 2O are shown carrying outwardly of the plate 7 in the top construction and outwardly of both plates 7 and 8 of the other construction guide members 2l for steadying the wings in their movement from and toward the axis of rotation of the rotating body upon increase and decrease of the rotative velocity thereof.
Some color ornamentation is preferably provided on the face of the spinning toy which is exposed to view. The plate 7 in the top construction, and both plates 7 and 8 in the Figs. 5 and 6 construction, are shown provided with circles of different colors, for instance 22, 23. Any suitable contrasting colors maybe employed. rlhe wings 10 are shown provided with segments 2st, 25 of colors. These segments are struck fromvthe axis of rotation of the rotatable body with the wings at their extended position so that an entirely uninterrupted ring of color will be presented to the vision.
While the wings are in their full extended position the ring or margin of color produced by the wings will be more subdued and somewhat hazy in comparison with the margin of the solid body. This enhances the interesting edect of the toy. The plates or slides 21 are preferably segments of circles which, when the wings are in their retracted position, will abut together and form a complete disk with the exception of the necessary notch for accommodating the supporting device. These segments 2l are preferably given such a color that in conjunction with the colors of the rings 22 and 23 different colors will be assumed by the body incident to the various positions of the slides thereover.
It is not intended to limit myself to the specic embodiments of the invention illustrated since it will be apparent that changes may be made withinthe scope of the claims withoutdeparting from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is 1 A device of the character specified, the combination with a pair of plates, of a block for holding the plates together and spacing the same apart, wings mounted in the space between such plates, elastic means for retracting the said wings, one or both of said plates being provided with guide slots, studs carried by the said wings and disposed in said slots.
