BASE PLATE FOR FEEDING MECHANISMS.
APPLICATION FILED APR-26.1915.

CAREY A. CHESHIRE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BASE-PLATE on EEEDiNG MECHANISMS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented my 20, 1915.
Original application filed. February 20, 1914, Serial No. 819,925. Divided and. this application filed April I 1915. se'rialfivg. 24,022.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CAREY A. CHESHIRE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Base-Plates for Feeding Mechanisms, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements 1n base plates for feeding mechanisms, especially adapted for use in conjunction with book gathering machines, the present nvcntion constituting a division of my prior application for book gathering and stacking machine, filed February 20, 1914:, Serial No. 819,925.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention Will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectlon taken through a feeding hopped equipped with a reciprocating base plate embodying my invention, said section being taken on substantially line 1-1 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 2, a vertical transverse section of said construction.
. The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawing, comprises a central longitudinal bar or slat 3 secured to the top of a reciprocating supporting bar 4 and associated with two parallel strips or bars 5 to constitute a central platform. The base plate is completed by adding sides to said platform, each of said sides consisting of longitudinal slats or bars 6 and 7 secured together to constitute a supporting frame and hinged to the central platform by means of hinges 8 to swing in planes substantially at right angles to the direction of reciprocation of the base plate. Each of the sides of the base plate carries a depending swinging link 9 operating through a clamping block 10 secured to the bottom of bar 1 and provided with a set screw 11 for clamping the same in adjusted positions. The base plate thus provided is arranged to constitute the bottom of a feed hopper 12 and serve as a means for delivering the bottommost member of a stack of book signatures or similar articles in said hopper to feed rollers 13 arranged to receive the same, said tially as described.
mechanism being more fully illustrated and described in my prior application, above mentioned.
By means of the arrangement specified, the curvature of the base plate may be varied as desired to adapt the same for the feeding of articles of different degrees of stiffness, it being obvious that the more flexible the article tobe fed, the more readily it assumes a curved position and the more curvature is necessary to afford sufficient stiffness for feeding.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to I what I 1. A device of the class described. comprising a reciprocating base plate curved transversely with respect to the direction of reciprocation; and means for adjusting the extent of curvature of said plate, substantially as described 2. A device of the class described comprising a reciprocating base plate concaved downwardly and transversely with respect to the direction of reciprocation; and means for adjusting the extent of concavity of said plate, substantially as described.
3. A device of the class described comprising a reciprocatingbase plate, the sides of said plate being hinged to swing in planes substantially at right angles tothe direction of reciprocation; and means for securing said sides in different positions, substantially as described. I p
4. A device of the class described comprising a reciprocating base plate, the sides of said plate being hinged to swing in planes substantially at right'anglesto'the direction of reciprocation; links pivotally connected with said sides; and clamps for securing said links in different positions, substan- 5. A device of the class described comof a central rigid platform and sides hinged to said platform to swing in planes substanname to this specification in the presence of tially at right angles to the direction of retwo subscribing Witnesses. ciprocation; links pivotally connected With said sides; and clamps for securing said CAREY CHESHIRE 5 links in difierent positions, substantially as Witnesses:
described. JOSHUA R. H. Po'r'rs,
In testimony whereof I have signed my HELEN F. LILLIs.
