Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN H. PURGELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Knob, in the county'of Shasta and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in "Gun-Rests; and I do declare the following to be a clear, full, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application.

This invention relates to rests used in conjunction with shotguns, rifles or similar firearms, the object of the invention being to produce a resilient rest adapted to be engaged with any portion of the body of the gun and held in the left hand during the shooting operation, which rest is adapted to overcome any quivering or vibration of the gun due to any nervousness on the part of the shooter.

A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purposes for which it is designed.

These objects, I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of the parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claim.

On the drawings, similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.

Figure l is a side elevation of a gun showing my improved structure installed thereon. Fig. 2 is a side view of the rest.

Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the gun.

My improved rest consists of a spiral spring 2 having the terminal of its lower convolution bent upwardly, as at 3, into the plane of the convolutions so as not to injure the shooter. The upper end of the spring 2 is formed into a yoke or similar attaching member 4: adapted to engage and hold the spring 2 against the body of the gun 1 at any suitable point as best adapted to the desires of the shooter. In practice, this rest is removable and can readily be carried in the pocket of the shooter. l/Vhen the gun is to be used, it is attached as shown in Fig. 1 and the lower portion held in the palm of the hand. Thus any slight movement of the shooter, due to nervousness or other conditions, will be compensated for and overcome by the resiliency of the spring 2 so there will be no quivering or vibration of the gun body such as to destroy the accuracy in shooting.

From the foregoing description it will readily be seen that I have produced such a device as substantially fulfils the objects of the invention as set forth herein.

While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice, such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention, as defined by the appended claim.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The combination with a gun, of a resilient member, such resilient member comprising an upper yoke adapted to be frictionally engaged with the body of the gun, a coiled spring projecting downwardly from said yoke, the lower convolution of such spring having its end bent backward within the convolutions of the spring so as to form a smooth rest at the bottom of the spring adapted to be held in the palm of the hand of the operator of the gun, as described.
