Be it known t at I, SoLoMoN LEVIN, a

citizen of the United States, residing at- Holdrege, in the county of Phelps and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoulder-Pads, of which the following is a specification. I

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in coats particularly those worn by mail carriers and other persons that are employed in carrying bags Wherem the straps are brought over the shoulders, and hasfor its primary object to provlde a. shoulder pad that carries a hook and is designed to fit snugly upon the shoulder of a coat in such manner that the strap of a bag or satchel may be mounted within the hook and across the-pad and wear on the material of which the coat is formed is prevented.

Another object of importance is to provide a pad that is approximately concavoconvex, will partiallyirelieve the strain on the shoulder of a person carrying a bag or satchel with astrap thereon and also eliminate wear on the goods.

Another object is to provide a pad of the character. described that may be wornin such manner that it Wlll not be readily detected and a neat appearance presented also proving comfortable to the wearer.

Another object is to provide a pad of the character described that is of a simple con-.

struction, capable of being readily attached and detached so that it may be carrieplin' a pocket of the wearers coat when not in use and inexpensive to manufacture." The'above and additional ob ects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more particularly pointed out as claimed.

\Vith reference to the drawings, wherein I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention a-s'it is reduced to practice and throughout the several views of which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my improved pad in use, Fig.

2 is a transverse sectional view taken through the pad and hook, and Fig. 3 is a fragmentary plan view showing the manner of securing the pad to the shoulder and lapel portion of a coat. f

of reference the numeral 1 designates as an entirety the body portion of my improved pad which consists of a sheet metal plate that is approximately triangular in shape and is concavo-convex. A stri or layer of felt or some other suitably so t material 2 is stitched about the periphery of the metal lic body 1 and is to be Worn adjacent to the materialof the shoulder of the coat. 'A fab ric layer or strip 3 is stitched about the top of the body 1 and said strip is of the same material preferably of which the suit or coat is formed.- Hinged at one end to the apex the weight evenly distributed. A pin fastening element designated 7 as an entirety is inserted through the metallic eyelets 8 in the hook and secured to the material of the coat designated 9 as an entirety underneath the collar 10 thereof. The hook 4 may be stitched if desired to the apex end of the pad to provide a secure fastening therefor.

It Will be readily seen that my improved pad may be easily attached or worn uponthe shoulder of a coat in such manner that the-strap of a bag or. satchel may be carried thereupon 'andisiprevented slipping. The pad in being curved in cross section or concavo-convex closely fits about the shoulder and prevents wear thereon. The weight of the satchel or bag being carried is evenly distributed and blisters or sore shoulders which often occur from carrying bags or satchels of the character described, are ob viated.

By virtue of having the strap-supporting hook hingedly connected to the shoulder-engaging member, the mail carrier can bend his body without danger of the mail bag strapslipping fromthe pad, for when the carriers body is assuming a bended position,

the hook will be swung outwardly and effectively support the bag therefrom. Another advantage derived fromfhingedly connecting the hook, is that when the carrier is about to pass over his shoulder the strap of a mail bag filled with-mail,'the carrier can bend hisbody sidewise in thedirection of the mail bag, and thereby swing the hook of the bag when a .carriers body is assuming an upright position. I v

In practice, I have found that the form of my invention, illustrated in the drawings and referred toin the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is the most eflicient and practical; yet realizing that the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be re sorted to, when required, without sacrificing any ofthe advantages of my invention, as set forth.

a hook located on the upper surface of the shoulder-engaging member and having the terminal of its shank hingedly secured on the apex of the shoulder-engaging member, fastening means for securing the shoulderengaging member to the garment, and located at the apex of the said shoulder-engaging member. r
