SANITARY KN EADING-IBOARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 3.1, 1915.
Application filed May 4, 1914. Serial N 0. 836,382.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I,- EDWARD C. MIX, a citizen of the United States, residing atLong Beach, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Sanitary Kneading-Board, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to molding and kneading boards as used in kitchens for making bread, cutting meat and kindred purposes, and has for its object the provision of means for rendering such boards sanitary in every respect and obviating the necessity for cleaning and scraping the boards after use, which consists, primarily, in spreading paper or parchment over the upper surface of the board in such a manner that it may be held firmly in contact with the board and removed and destroyed after use, the paper or parchment being mounted on the board in a suitable receptacle from which it may be played out from aroll or otherwise supplied to the board, as desired.
I attain the above objects by the mechanism illustrated in theaccompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a-perspective of a board with my device shown thereon and with certain portions broken away; Fig. 2 is a fragmen-, tary sectional elevation on the line a0 m of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional elevation on the line w' w of Fig. 2; Fig.1 4 is a fragmentary perspective of the paper clamp hinge; and Fig. 5 is a section of the outer end of the board showing the clamp in position in the groove.
Similar characters of reference indicate the same parts throughout the specifications and the Several views of the'drawings.
In the drawings, 1 represents an ordinary molding, kneading or meat cutting board, which may be of any convenient size, and which, in my device serves as a base, upon which is mounted, at one end, a tubular housing of metal and comprising two semi-cylindrical sections 3 and 4, hinged together at the back by means of a pin 5 adapted to seat in the outwardly bent hinge sections 6 on the upper member and 7 on the lower member of the housing. The upper member 3 of the housing has suitable endv closures 8 suitn ably secured thereto, and the lower member 4 has the end members 9, which, in additi n to forming a closure for lower member, extend down to and are secured to the side of the board 1 by means of the screws 10, the
end members of both the u members of the housing belng adapted to aline and entirely close the end of the housing, except for the central perforation 11 which is formed half in one and half in the other of said end members.
A core 12 made of paper pulp or other suitable and similar material having formed on each end an annular groove 13 is adapted to be revolubly mounted in the housing, the periphery of the perforations 11 engaging the annular grooves 13 in the end members 8 and 9 and the lateral movement of the core thus prevented. A roll of sanitary paper or parchment is secured at one end to the core 12 and the other end of the paper is adapted to protrude downwardly through the lateral slot 14 in the lower portion of the member 4 of the housing, the width of the paper roll 15 and that of that slot 14: being substantially the width of the board 1.
The metal in the vicinity of the hinge sections 6 and 7 of the two members 3 and/l of the housing and also at the front thereof, may be SO formed that no dust can enter the housing and a suitable latch 16 may be secured to one of the members and adapted to latch over a suitable hook or eye 17 in the other member of the housing, and a roll of paper may be either placed in position or removed by opening the housing.
The paper 15 is adapted to be drawn through the slot and sufliciently forward of the board as to completely cover the length thereof and enough more to hang down slightly over the front edge, as shown in Fig. 2, and as it is necessary that the paper should be held firmly in contact with the board when the board is in use, I provide a lateral V-shaned groove 18 in the top of'the board, slightly in front of the housing, and a similar groove 19 in the front edge of the board, in the former of which, 18, is seated a lateral rod 20 of'triangular cross a section whose top is substantially flush with the top of the board and to which is secured a flat, thin strip of metal 21 extending slightly forward of the groove and adapted to rest on the top of the board when the rod 20 is in the groove, and the groove 19 havmg a similar rod 22 except that it lacks the metal strip 21, and its outer surface is adapted to be substantially flush with the edge of the board 1.
The rod v20 is resiliently held in the groove 18 by means of a pair of oppositely mounted pper and lower arms 23, one on each side of the board 1,
23 and the edge of the board 1, secured at one end to a screw 10 in the board and at the other hooked over the end of the screws 25.
The outer rod 22 has an eye 28 secured in one end which is hinged to a bracket 29 by a suitable pin 30, the bracket 29 is secured to the board 1 by a screw 31 and a dowel 32 adapted to seat in a suitable perforation in the edge of the board to prevent its turn ing, and the other end of the rod has a screw 33 with a head 34 between which and the end of the rod a seat is formed to receive a hook 35 on a latch 36 secured pivotally to the board 1 by a screw 37. Thus the paper 15 when drawn under the rods 20 and 22, is forced into the grooves 18 and 19 and the tension of the springs 26 at one end and the rigid clamp formed by the rod 22 and the latch at the other end, and is held smoothly and in rigid contact with top surface of the board.
A suitable eye 38 may be secured to the rear edge of the board 1 for hanging the board on a wall, and a similar eye 39 is se cured to the top of the plate 21 and the rod 20 in order that the rod 22 and the arms 23 to which it is secured may be raised sufficiently to slip the paper under, when spreading it over the top of the board.
When it is desired to use the board, the rod 20 may be raised and the end of the paper grasped and drawn forward until it extends slightly forward of the end of the board, the latch 36 may be released from the rod 22, this rod swung outwardly on its pivot, the paper slipped between the rod and the end of the board, the rod forced with the paper into the groove 19 and the latch hooked again over the end of the rod. After a piece of the paper has been used and a clean piece is desired, or, in the event that further use of the board is not required, the rod 22 may be released from the latch and the used portion of the paper torn off against the edge of the plate 21 on the rod 20, the edge of this plate being suflicientlv in advance of the groove 18 to permit the grasping of the end of the paper for further use.
Paper such as I intend to be used in connection with my device is frequently required in kitchens for covering butter, cakes, meats and similar articles, and when hung on the wall of the kitchen or pantry, a supply of such paper may be always available by tearing off a suflicient length from the roll 15, and without removing the board from the wall.
In the device herein described and illustrated, it is obvious that a practical, simple,
cheap and effective molding and kneading board is provided which may be used for any ordinary purpose, and being thoroughly sanitary and dust proof, the necessity for scraping and cleaning the boards is elimi nated and a cheaper board may be used for all purposes. It is obvious that the structure of my invention may be changed in many particulars, according to the purpose for which it is used, without departing from the spirit of my invention, and though I am aware of several different ways of accomplishing the same result, it is thought that the structure shown and illustrated is preferable to all others, and believing the device entirely novel, I desire to claim broadly thereon.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire Letters Patent for, is:
l. A sanitary kneading board provided at one end with a suitable paper receptacle having means whereby a roll of paper may be inserted therein and removed therefrom and an aperture whereby the end of the paper may be drawn through the receptacle and extended over the top surface of the board, combined resilient clamping and paper tearing means adjacent to said receptacle and rigid clamping means at the opposite end of said board for holding the paper firmly in position thereon.
2. A sanitary kneading board provided with a suitable paper receptacle at one end adapted to revolubly and removablv hold a roll of paper and having means whereby the paper may be extended over the top surface of the board, resilient clamping means adja cent to said receptacle and rigid clamping means at the opposite end of said board for holding the paper firmly in position thereon.
3. A kneading board provided with a rigidly mounted transversely disposed paper receptacle at one end having a hinged top and means for'holding a roll of paper, and a pair of transverse grooves, one on the top surface of the board adjacent to said recep tacle and the-other on the opposite end thereof; combined paper clamping and tearing means adapted to register with and resiliently hold the paper in said first mentioned groove, and rigid clamping means adapted to hold the paper in said other groove.
