Description

A section thereof on the line -ae l snaar-rac an. e.
speciiication of Letters Patent.
Appia-'ation mea september 1e, me. serial no. 361,990.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be itVV known that I, DUGALD S. PA'rnRsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Sheet-Packing, ofwhichthe following is a specification.
My invention consists of sheet packing composed-of a body of metal and fibrous material thereon, it being adapted to be cut into shapes as gaskets land for other purposes;
'llhel invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention -is not limited to the specic details shown'and describe Figure 1 represents a face view, of a sheet packing partly broken away embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal Fig. 1, onan enlarged scale. Fig. 3 represents a face view similar to Fig.l 1 Vof .another embodiment of the invention. Fig. 4 represents a perspective view ofanother embodiment of the invention.

'On said faces of the bodyjs placed a covering 3 of asbestos o r other suitable fibrous materiaLsaid covering occupying and filling said' pockets and extending over the outer Walls of the elevated'. portions' of the pockets forming continuous surfaces of ,the coatin ymaterial on bothfaces or sides of the bo y.
In somecases, it 'isdesirable 'to have the, pockets open at the top yand bottom,'-as.in-
Fig. 3, in which case the ieee 4 of expand-l ed-metal will answer admirably for the pull-1- suc ' pockets' throughout end' to ,end and Joining the material-that forms the entire. covering ous purposes,
therein,
of sheet metal bent faces of the sheet, l from each other, and fibrousl packing in said vpockets lying' iush with the surfaces of the meta1lsheet, substantially as described.
ofY said piece. In other cases, it is desirable' to fill the pockets with the fibrous material and leave uncovered the bases 5 of said pockets which ma be above or below, so

that said bases anv material alternate, prod(Eiucing a-che'cker-board effect, as shown in The `packing' will be found ada ted 'admirably to be formed into gaskets or varibrake band linings of .auto vehicles, treads vor pads for foot boards, stairs, etc., and other articles and shapes.
Having thus described my invention :what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is a 1. A. sheet packing comprising bent .metal sheet forming pockets, and fibrous packing in the pockets, substantially as described.
2. A` sheet packing 4comprising a bent metal sheet having fibrous material embedded in the surface thereof, substantially as described.
.3. A sheet packing comprising a bent metal sheet having pockets in its opposite faces, and fibrous material in said pockets, substantially vas described.
4. A. sheet packing comprising a bent metal sheet having ber containing pockets and the walls of said pockets bent at an angle to the surfaces of the packing of the sheet, substantially as described.
5. A sheet packing comprising a bent sheet of metal having pockets formed in its opposite faces, fibrous material in said feo pockets, and the walls -of said pockets bent l at an angle to the surface'of the packing, substantially as described.
6. A` sheetpacking comprising amsection formingpockets in both said pockets separated DUGALD S. PATERSON.
