Specification of Letters Patent.
PatenteoiNov.23, 1915;
Application fiiedNovember 28 Serial N0.'874,440.
To all whom/it may concern:
Be it known that I, Planar M. Ari Menus? TER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gig Harbor, in the county of Pierce and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic lVindow-Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to automatic window locks, and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a device of simple construction adapted to be mounted upon the lower rail of the upper sash, and which will permit the raising of the lower sash and the lowering of the upper sash and when said lower sash is brought down and the upper sash raised the lock will be automatically operated to lock the two sashes, one relatively to the other.
Another object of the invention is to provide an automatic sash lock which will not interfere with the usual pivoted sash locks which will prevent the rattling of the sashes.
The foregoing and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of a sash lock made in accordance with this invention and applied to the upper sash, while the ordinary pivoted cam member is secured to the lower sash and turned into locking position or partially so. Fig. 2 is a side elevation and partial section of the same in locking position. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the automatic lock in unlocked position so that the lower sash may be raised or the upper sash lowered, if desired. Fig. 4 is a view in side elevation and partial section showing the lower sash moved slightly upward, and Fig. 5 is a similar view showing the lower sash moved upward beyond the lock and the lock being in position to engage the upper edge of the lower sash when lowered.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the midrail of the lower sash and 2 is the midrail of the upper sash. Connected to the center of the midrail 1 is the ordinary pivoted cam fastener member 3,
and it will be understood that my sash lock l i; may be used in connection with this cam fastener member, if desired. When connected to a window provided with this device, my automatic sash lock may, however, be used mdependently of this cam fastener.
The automatic sash lock comprises a base plate 4 secured by screws 5 to the lower or midrail 2- of the upper sash. Extending out from the base plate 4c is a pair of hookshaped brackets 6, spaced apart and pivoted at 7 between said members is an S-shaped lock 8, said lock comprising a plane eXtending finger 9 and a locking member 10. A finger-hold or handle 11 extends at right angles to the finger 9.
The operation of the invention may be briefly described as follows: When the cam lever 3 is swung upon its pivot to unlocking position to permit the lower sash to be raised or the upper sash lowered and the finger 9 is moved on the pivotal point 7 to the position shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the lower sash may then be raised or the upper sash lowered and will lift the finger 9 into the position shown in Fig. 4c of the drawing. Upon further lifting the lower sash or lowering the upper sash the finger 9 will drop into the position shown in Fig. 5. When the lower sash is brought down or the upper sash raised the locking member 10 will drop by gravity on the top of the midrail of the lower sash or on top of the cam, after which the fastener 3 may be swung to latching position as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. When using the cam member 3 and by turning it upon its pivotal point the cam flange will run in rear of the locking member 10 and will prevent the window from rattling.
Various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the claims.
What is claimed is 1. An automatic sash lock comprising a bracket having spaced members and adapted to be secured to the lower rail of the upper sash, a locking member pivoted between the spaced members of the bracket and comprising a finger adapted to bear upon the upper surface of the upper rail of the lower sash and a member formed integral with the finger which drops automatically on the top of the upper rail of thelower sash when said rails are brought into coincidence.
2. .A sash lock comprising a bracket adapted to be secured to the upper side of the lower rail of the upper sash, said bracket having spaced members, a combined lock and finger pivoted between said members, and comprising a body portion having a finger projecting from one end thereof and a locking projection from the other end thereof, said finger adapted to engage the upper side of the upper rail of the lower sash when the sashes are closed, and when said lower sash is raised or the upper sash lowered, said finger is moved to throw the 10 lock member into position to lock the sashes when closed.
In testimony whereof I afix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
