Description

UNITED STATES JOSEPH S. LETORD, OF SEDALIA, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMPOUNDS FOR DYEING HAIR.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,462, dated June 27, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH S. Lnronn, of Sedalia, in the county of Pettis and State of Missouri, have invented a certain Improved Compound for Dyeing Hair; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, enabling those skilled in the art to make and use the same.
The object of my invention is the production of a hairdye which may be applied Without previously subjecting the hair to the process of cleansing by alkaline solutions or acids of any kind, now commonly practiced; and to this end the improved preparation is composed of crystallized nitrate of silver dissolved in concentrated aqua ammonia, and mixed with a sufficient quantity of deodorized glycerine to give the desired body to the compound.
To prepare the compound, take crystallized ni trate of silver in the proportion of one dram to one ounce of concentrated aqua ammonia, and
add to this solution one and one-half dram of deodorized glycerine. It is then ready for use.
The first application of this compound will dye the hair to a brownish color, and, by continuing the applications, the hair may be dyed to any color from brown to a deep black. If it is desirable to dye the hair to a light brown, the preparation should be weakened to the required degree by the addition of water.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The manufacture or preparation of a compound for dyeing hair, composed of the ingredients and in substantially the proportions set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
