Application filed April 26, 1915. Serial No. 23,946.
To all whom t lmay concern.'
Be it known that I, Mi a citizen of the United Mankato, in the county o- State of Minnesota, have useful Improvements in of which the following is a infants are oftentimes trou lency, colic and indigestion as a re rapid a flow of mil ing women, and it is tion to avoid such faut can nurse w The invention co-n of a breast shield construc elastic material having a opening to receive the nip the latter with suiiicient pressure to a rapid flow of the milk.
Other object the invention is better following description w tion with the accompanying drawing.
1n the drawing forming part of this application, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the sever Figure 1 is a top plan view. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view. tion taken on line ZJ-b of Fig. 1.
The device forming my invention comprises a s 5, constructed from any sui terial, preferably rubber of the desired thickness. The device breast of nursing women, and provided with a restricted central opening 6 to nipple, the ec the inherent ela which the device is con the nipple with sufficient pressure 'd flow of milk from en proves injurio fant, causing the latter to suffer from flatuigestion. The body porthe edge of th d slit is a Strip 8 erial of greater elasticity than the material from which the body the strip 8 permitting an' a too rapi which quite oft lency, colic and ind tion 5 is slit as at 7 from opening G, and covering sai of relatively thin mat 5 is constructed,

bled with flatuk from the breast o the object of this inventrouble whereby the intemplates the p ted from suitab restricted central ple and embrace the nature of al views and wherethe subject ma emispherical body table elastic mais to be fitted over the the breast,
adjustment of the opening 6 when necessary, also adding to the effectiveness of the device by increasing the pressure upon the nipple for the purpose hereinabove stated. The strip 8 may be secured to the body portion 5 in any suitable manner, preferably by vulcanizing the latter to the body portion 5 so as to form an integral part thereof, and the strip 8 may be of the same color as the body portion 5, thereby adding to the general appearance of the device. Irrespective of the manner in which the strip 8 is secured to the body portion 5 the strip must be arranged to provide a perfectly smooth surface with the surface of the body portion 5 so as not to interfere or injure the lips of the infant while nursing. The device may be made in any size or in several sizes, it being understood, however, that the body portion 5 is constructed to snugly fit over the breast With a view of holding the device in proper position and 'is not intended to exert any pressure whatever upon the breast.
lt is believed that from the foregoing description the nature and advantages of the invention will be thoroughly understood without requiring a more extended explanation and therefore the same has been omitted. However 1 desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein illustrated, as various changes may be made in the manufacture of the device when desired as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Vhat is claimed is 1. A breast shield constructed from elastic material and comprising a semispherical .bo-dy having an opening therein and adapted to fit over the breast and exert pressure around the nipple for the purpose described.
2. A breast shield constructed from elastic material and comprising a body to tit over the breast and having a restricted central opening to embarce the nipple to exert pressure around the latter for the purpose described.
8. A breast shield constructed from elastic material and comprising a semispherical body having a central restricted opening, and a portion of said body adjacent said opening having greater elasticity than the remaining portion of the body.
