F. T. WIECHERT.
FOUNTAIN FAUCETl APPLlcAl'oN FILED ocr. s, 1914.
Patented Jan. 11, 1916.
FRANK T. WIEOHERT, OE BELLEVUE, OI-IIO.l
FOUNTAIN-EAUCET.
Application led October 8, 1914.
T0 all w71 om it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK T. VVinCI-IERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bellevue, in the county of Huron and State of Chio, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Fountain-Faucets, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to improvements in fountain faucets, the present embodiment of the invention being particularly desgned and adapted for use in drawing or dspensing carbonated water in connection with soda fountains.
T he primary object of the invention is to provide a generally improved faucet of this class which will be exceedingly simple in construction, cheap of manufacture, and efficient in use.
A further object is the provision of a fountain or dispensing faucet which may be operated and controlled with exceedingly great ease and convenience and in which the various parts are so arranged and dispose-:l as to reduce liability to breakage or disarrangement to a minimum.
A still further object is the provision of what may be termed a double acting fountain faucet, that is to say,-one in which the operating handle is adapted to perform its functions by either` a rearward or forward movement on its pivot.
Vith the above mentioned and other ends in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in one of its embodiments in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, .forming a part of this specification, Figure l, is a side elevation of the improved fountain faucet in its normal or closed position. Fig. 2, an enlarged central longitudinal sectional view of the faucet body, the parts being shown in closed position. Fig. 3, a front elevation of the improved faucet on the scale shown in Fig. 1.
Similar numerals of reference designate like parts throughout all the gures of the drawings.
The improved fountain vfaucet comprises a stationary valve body 1, in the present instance, screw threaded upon a supply pipe or stem 2, said valve body being provided with oppositely disposed or upper and lower valve chambers 3 and 4, respectively. The
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J 2111.11, 1916.
Serial No. 865,683.
upper and lower valve chambers communicate with each other through the medium of an intermediate'valve opening or reducing passage 5, the latter having oppositely d sposed annular valve seats 5u, and as a means of conveniently forming said valve opening 5, and valve seats 5a, as well as of assembling the parts, said valve body l, is preferably provided with a second section l, which latter is screw threaded upon the lower' end of the body or section 1, and in the present instance, forms the lower valve chamber 4. rIhe second section la, is preferably screw threaded at its lower end similar to the part or section 1, and is provided with a depending cap 6, having an opening 6a, communicating with the lower valve chamber 4; If
desired, suitable packing gaskets 7, may be interposed between the parts l, la, and 6, as shown. Thesupply pipe or stem 2, is Drovided with a suitable supply opening or port 2a, communicating with a supply port or passgage 3a, leading to the upper Valve chamv` As a means of opening and closing communication between the valve chambersV 3 and 4, as well as regulatingthe supply of liquid to and through the discharge stem or bib portion of the faucet a movable valve stem S, is provided, said stem, in the present instance, comprising upper and lower memy bers 8 and 8a, respectively, said, valve stem extending through the Valveopening or passage and carrying upper and lower valve members 9 and 9a. in the chambers 3 and 4, being adapted to be seated upon the valve seats 5a, whereby upon the movements of the valve stem said passage 5, is adapted to be opened and closed thereby opening and closing communication between the chambers 3 and 4. The valves 9 and 9a, are preferably formed of suitable resilient material such as rubber or the like, and, in the present instance, are mounted upon attaching disks or flanges carried by the members S and 8a, of the valve stem.
As a means of providing for the drawing of a small fountain or pencil stream as desired in fountain faucets of this class, the valve stem is provided with a centrally located longitudinally extending passage 10, said passage 10, in the present instance, being formed in the lower member 8a, of the valve stem and being provided with a lateral inlet port 10a, communicating with the intermediate valve opening 5, so that when the valve stem is elevated, by the mechanism hereinafter described, to close the passage 5, through the closure of the lower valve 9, said inlet port 10a, only communicates with the passage 5, and upper valve chamber 3, thereby causing a small fountain or pencil stream to issue from the faucet portion of the improved faucet. The valve member 8a, is preferably screw threaded at its upper end to connect with a similarly threaded opening in the lower end of the stem member S, and the relative distance. between the valve members 9 and 9u, may be regulated through the medium of washer members ll,
it being apparent that by elevating or moving the lower stem 8, and the valve member 9a,=.,carried thereby upwardly the opening between said valve member 9., and its seat may be regulated thereby regulating the ordinary liquid stream issuing therethrough.
rlhe upper end of the stein S, is guided in a guide opening lb, of the stationary member l, in itsvertical movements, it being observed that an annular passage is formed about such stem which communicates with the supply port or passage 3a.
As a means of operating or moving the valve stem aswell as providing a suitable bib lor nozzle, a movable faucet member l2, is provided, said faucet member l2, consisting, Iin the present instance, ofa cylindrical member surrounding the stationary valve bodyv and guided at its upper ends in `an annular groove or recess le, (see Fig. Q) of the stationary valve body l, the lower end of said vertically movable faucet member l2, terminating in a bib or depending nozzle 1.3,
the latter-being adaptedto support and move the valve stem through the medium of a spider support 14, the lower end of the valve stein being looselv mounted in al suitable opening in the spider l-fe, and being supported by a shoulder 8".
As a means of giving the vertically movable faucet member l2, and the stem and valve members carried thereby, the requisite movementsa vertically extending handle l5, is provided, said handle being mounted and fiilcriiined upon the stationaryvalve body l, through the medium of oppositely disposed fulcrum members l5, adapted to cooperate with oppositely disposed beveled or inclined portions ld, at the front and rear sides of the valve body, the arms 15b, of the handle being pivotally secured to opposite sides of the cy'- lindrical portion of the vertically movable faucet member l2, through the medium of pivot screws 16, so that when the handle 15,
Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
is moved either forwardly or rearwardly by kthe hand of the operator the cooperation of vmember l2, to be correspondingly eleifated and the valve members 9 and 9, correspondingly moved or operated for controlling the fountain stream through the faucet in an obvious manner and as yliereinbefore plained.
F rom the forego-ing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood..
Having thus described one of the embodiments of my invention, what l claim'and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-'
l. A fountain faucet, comprising a tionary valve body including a section threaded thereon and having oppositely disposed Avalve chambers, a movable surrounding cylinder terminating in a nozzle member carrying a hollow valve stem, the latter being removable with the removal of said sec.`
tion and adapted to communicatewith one of said valve chambers, valves on said valve stem operating. in said valve chambers and adapted to open and close communication between said valve chambers and between .one of said valve cliambers'and said hollow va ve stein, and means for operating vand regulating the movements of said movable cylinder and nozzle member.
` 2. A fountain faucet, comprising a stationary valve body having oppositelyT disposed valve' chambers, said valve body iiicluding a threaded'section forming one of said chambers and provided with oppositely disposed valve seats, a vertically movable surrounding cylinder and nozzle member carrying a liquid discharge valve stem adapted to communicate with one of said valve chambers and provided with oppositely disposed valves operating -in said valvey chambers and coperating'with said valve seats,'and means for Voperating said vertically movable' surrounding cylinder and nozzle member whereby to ope 1ate said valves and open and close communication between one of said valve chambers and said liquid discharge stem.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
