To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that" I", 'VVILLIAM'BENDER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, Winfield, borough of'Queens, in the countyof Queens and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Mold-Clamp, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to molds for forming concrete columns and similar structures.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved mold clamp, which is simple and durable in construction, can be easily applied for securely holding the mold sides in position against spreading.
In order to accomplish the desired result, use is made of angular plates adapted to fit onto the corners of the mold and having their leg members fitting the sides of the mold, the leg members on each mold side overlapping one the other, and the said members being provided with slots extending in the direction of the length of the members, the slots of the overlapping members being in register, and a bolt passing through the registering slots of each pair of overlapping members to adjustably fasten the members together.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the clamp as applied to a mold for forming a square concrete column; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional side elevation of the same on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
The four-sided mold shown in the drawing has each side formed of planks 10 connected with each other by cross boards 11 to hold the planks 10 for each mold side to gether. The clamp for this four-sided mold consists of four horizontally disposed angular plates 12, alike in construction and each fitting eXteriorly onto a corner of the mold, as plainly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Each angular plate 12 has its leg members 13 and 14 extending eXteriorly along the sides of the mold and the said members are of suflicient length for the members of each side of the mold to overlap each other. si'de -oftheimold and in register' with'each other, and through the registering slots passes a' bolt '16 adjustably fasteningthe overlapplng members on each mold side together." Itwill be noticed that on loosening the bolt 16 the angular plates 12 can be shifted inward and outward to fit the corresponding sides of the mold, and when the plates snugly embrace the mold sides then their members 13 and 14 are securely fastened together by the bolt 16 to prevent the plates from coming apart and thus holding the mold sides 10 against spreading.
In practice, any number of clamps may be used according to the height of the mold, and the lowermost plates 12 are preferably rested on the corresponding cross boards 11, as plainly indicated in Figs. 2 and 3. In order to prevent accidental lateral shifting of the angular plates 12 one relatively to the other, the contacting faces of the overlapping members 13 and 14 are provided with lengthwise extending ridges and grooves 17 and 18, of whichthe ridges 17 of one member fit into the grooves 18 of the other mem ber, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 3. WVhen using the mold clamp on molds for forming columns of other polygonal shape, such as five-sided, six-sided or eight-sided columns, then the members 13 and 14 of each plate 12 are arranged according to the angle of adjacent mold sides but otherwise the construction and use of the plates remains the same as above described.
It will be noticed that the mold clamp can be readily placed in position for holding the mold sides against spreading, and after the column is formed the plates can be readily disconnected and removed for the removal of the sides 10 of the mold.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A mold clamp, comprising a plurality of angular plates adapted to fit onto the corners of the mold and having their members fitting the sides of the mold, the members on a mold side overlapping one the other, the members being provided with slots extending in the direction of the length of the members, the slots of the overlapping members being in register, means extending through the slots for fastening the members together the contacting faces of the overlapping members being provided with length wise extending ridges and grooves, the;
cross boards and fitting snugly onto the corners and against the sides of the mold, the
members of each plate extending along adjacent sidesiof the mold and the said members ona mold. side lapping one over the other in a common plane, means for fastening the orerlapping members adjusted position, said members having their contacting faces provided with interengaging lon- 15 gitudinally extending ridges.
