BOTTLE vGAP AND sToPrER.
4To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR C. NoTHsTiNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at v Pittsburgh, in the countyof Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented cer`4 tain new and usefulImprovements' in Bottle Caps and Stoppers, of-y which the following is a specification. Y
The present invention relates to aV combined stopper and cap, which is particularly designed and adapted for use in connection n v with laboratory reagent bottles".
Fig. l.
A further objecty is to combine a stopper with a bottle cap, in such ya manner as'to yproduce an article especially yadapted for reagent bottles, irrespective of the ysizeof ythe bottles. f The accompanying drawings illustrate.
Referring more particularly to the Y ings, the bottle l is provided with a4 suitable neck 2 to which is ground a'glass stopper 3 in the usual manner. This stopper is provided with a cap 4, which as illustrated may be approximately hemispherical, although if so desired anyy other form may 'be adopted.
In Fig. 2. thevcap 4 is shownfasf/being. i
circular in cross-section, although obviously being circular. ,Itwill be noted that the height of the cap 4 yis somewhat greater than the height of the stopper 3, so that the stopper and cap, after being removed from the bottle, maybe directly laid upon the f ter, for the reason that it is always desir-y bench or work table in the laboratory with- .out danger of contaminating the stopper, or
the liquid to be held in the bottle 1. The
cap 4c obviously rprevents dust `and fumes from' settling upon the pouring lipV 5, which f is a disadvantagein bottles of this rcharacable to add the material from the bottle 1 ySpecification of Letters Patent.

,to the material being treated or i. tested,
without adding any impurities.y
' I call attention to the fact that caps have heretofore been placed upon reagent bottles of `this character, an ordinary hemispherical cap or cylindrical cap being frequently open to the objection that two steps are necessary forthe opening of the bottle, namely the removal of the cap, and thereafter the removal of the stopper, while in accordance with my invention, the cap andstopper will be removed'in a single operation. Moreover, f asabove` stated, by makingfthe cap longerv than the stopper, I can avoid contaminating the liquid in the bottle 1.
-Heretofore it has beennecessary to handle kthe stopper itself, 'by means of which small This, however, is
quantities ofthe liquid withinthe bottle are t apt tocome in Contact with the fingers of the operator, thereby producing discoloravtions or sores, whichV isk also avoided by means of the combined bottle cap and stop per forming my invention. It will be noted n that the lower edge of the hemisphercal capt, is some distance away from the bottle l, so'that when the Vstopper sticks in the bottle,l as Stoppers in reagent bottles yfre- Y quently do, the lower edge of the cap may be tapped lightly, in order kto loosen the stopper. 'y Y f What I claim is :e The combination with a glass reagent bottle having a pouring lip, of a glass stopper ground tofthe neck offsaid bottle, and a' cap 'integral with said stopper, said cap being of greater height than said stopper, thev lower end of ysaid cap being entirely free;
from Contact with the outer surface of said bottle, andfspaced therefrom a considerable f' l extent, substantially as, and for the purposes described. Y In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presencey of two witnesses."
