To all whom itinlay concern: Be it known that L'Nnnson P. J OHNSON, a citizen of the, United States, residing at South Pasadenayin the count of Los Angeles and State of California, ave invented a new and useful Measuringand Dispensing Device, of which the followlng isa specification. g

This invention relates to a measuring and dispensing device, and more. particularly to a-measuring' and dispensing device for dry materials such, for instance, as powdered soa ne of the objects of the invention is to provide a dispenser of this nature to be manually operated by the hand of the user to discharge thereinto a definite quantity of .its contents.
Another object of the invention is to provide a dispenser which will maintain its contents in a very sanitary condition, and one which is without complicated mechamsm.
A further object of the invention is to provide a measuring and dispensing device for dry materials which shall be a general improvement over such devices 'now in use.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated and claimed.
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the dispenser attached to a wash bowl. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the dispenser with the bottom wall removed. Fig. 3 isa top plan view of the dispenser with the body portion of the container omitted. Fig. 4 is a ve'rti cal sectional view taken on the plane of line 44 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view on a plane at right angles to the plane of Fig. 4.. *Fig. 6 is a detail fragmentary sectional view taken on the plane of line 66 of Fig. 3.
Referring in detail to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates as an entirety the container of the device, which in the present embodiment of the invention, comprises a base 2, body portion 3 and cover 4, all cylindrical in cross section. The body is detach-,

quickly cleaned. A partition 5 is provided horizontally withinthe base 2, and this part1 t1on is formed with a discharge opening 6 directly over the opening 7 in the, bottom 8 of the container. On the to of the partition 5 is mounted an annular carrier 9 which is formed with an annular series, of
pockets 10 adapted to be brought into registration with the discharge opening 6 by means of the actuating mechanism. This mechanism comprises shaft 11, which ex-.
tends through the carrier, and which has rigidly secured to its lower end under the partition 5 a ratchet wheel 12, which may be actuated by a pawl 13 pivoted at one end by means of the fastener 14 to the under side of a flat metal plunger 15. The pawl carr1es an upstanding tooth 14 to engage the teeth of the ratchet wheel and this tooth is held in engagement with the ratchet wheel by means of a spring 16. The ratchet wheel is so designed and the movement of the of the plunger sufiiciently to bring one of the pockets 10 into registration with the discharge opening 6.
The plunger works through openings formed in the base and projects into a hollow plunger 15 is so limited by the pin 16 as to cause the carrier to turn on each actuation arm 17 forming a part of a bracket 18 which may be secured to ,a suitable support by' means of fasteners 19. A spring 15 returns .the plunger to its normal position. To prevent the contents of the container caking and lumping, I provide on the upper terminal of the shaft 11 an agitator 20 consisting of a pair of twisted blades as shown.
A continuous discharge of the contents is prevented by the cover plate 21 secured to the interior of the container directly over the discharge opening 6 and above the disk carrier 9. This retaining plate is large enough to cover each of the pockets as they come into registration with the discharge opening, and it is-provided with a flat metal spring 22 on its under side, which. springs 1 into the pockets as they move over the discharge opening, and forces the contents outwardly. This spring also acts as a brake and prevents the carrier moving except when'the plunger is actuated.
When a charge of the containers contents 23, which in the present instance is soap, is
desired, the plunger is forced inwardly. This movement causes the pawl 13 to turn the ratchet wheel 12 sufficiently to bring one of the full pockets of the carrier 9 under cover plate 21 and above the discharge opening. When the pocketreaches this position, the spring 22 flies downwardly and knocks the contents of the pocket out and said contents fall into the operators hand, as shown in Fig. 1.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that I have provided a very simple and practical measuring and dispensing device, especially adapted for dry materials, and it Will be understood that while the drawing shows the preferred embodiment of my invention, minor changes in construction and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention as claimed.
What I claim is:
1. In a dispenser, a container having a partition formed therein, the partition and bottom of the container being each formed with a discharge opening one above, the other, a carrier mounted on thetop of the partition and having pockets adapted to aline With the discharge openings, a cover plate positioned over the discharge openings in close proximity to the top face of the carrier, a spring carried by the cover plate to project into the pockets as they move unin the bottom thereof, a horizontal partitionr within said containerihaving ,a discharge opening above said first mentlonecl opening, artition having;
a carrier mounted on: the pockets adapted to aline with the discharge openings, a plate mounted above the carrier in close proximity thereto, said plate being;
in alinement with the discharge openings, a
spring carried by the plate to project into the pookets as they are moved into registrat1on with the discharge openings, a shaft extending through the partition and being rigidly secured to the carrier, an agitator secured to the shaft above the partition, a ratchet wheel secured to the shaft below the partition, a reoiprocatory plunger movable through the container under the partition, a
pawl pivoted at one end to the plunger and having a tooth to engage said ratchet wheel,
and means for limiting the movement of the plunger in one direction.
