' FIG. Q
, -lwfmro Hamm/144 u *wir Essls.-
,l1/summer citizen of the United States, Philadelphia,
Acertain ,new and useful Improvements in.v 'irrigatore 'Q fY'YhiChihe fellewns is aeree- My invfntion'relates to improvements' irrigators, the object Aof the invention'being to. providean irrigatorwhich is especially a'dapte'djfor use in connection' with `wounds,
' abscesses, stulas,'}and`sores of all kinds, d irectingthe cleansing vfluid into ythe wound. and permitting a thoroughfdrainage with'- out wetting the patient, his clothing, or the bed clothing..y y f Heretofore in the use of irrigatore as commonly made, it has been practically im possible 'to thoroughly irrigate a wound without the .overflow or drain wetting the body, bed clothes and bedding, necessitating the use of rubber sheets'and the like and causing considerable trouble and annoyance. With my improved irrigator, thedra-inage is cared for, yet the wound is thoroughly irri ated.l l
ith these and other objects in AView, the vinvention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will'be more Iilully here after described and pointed outfin the claims.
ln the accompanying drawings: Figure vtudinal fsection.
1 represents a supply tube relatively small in diameter and having at one end a discharge nozzle 2, the `latter openv at its end, and provided in itssides with perforations 3, so that :the liquid not only passes througlh the end of the nozzle, but also through t e sides thereof.. h
4 is an outer tube of appreciably greater diameter thantube 1, and partially inclosingthe latter. fOn the supply tube 1, adjacent thenozzle 2,`an annular enlargement 5 is provided` which bears against theend of outer tube 4, `and said outer tube at itsr end adjacent thenozzle is provided in its. wall withy relatively large perforations 6' through which the 'water `and pus from the woundienters and is carried away as will be A hereinaftei'- explained.
7 is a coupling which isprovided with a` receives the screw-threaded end, 9V offou'ter tube, Said coupling 7 isf providedinuit's side opposite tothe opening18 witha smaller UNiTED STATES rATnNTi i Pet appiieatiitniediinber'a, 19.15'. seal No. 59,165.
opening V10 throughwhich the supply 'tube 1 projects. 1
A.. tube 11 threaded end 13 of vsupplyt'ubfe 1, and when curely f clamped together.
14| ,represents I a drain y 'tube-.which is] screwed into a threaded 'opening'lfin the i .1 coupling?,v and communicateswith the inis internally screw-threaded'at y .oneendas shown at1l2/to receivetheiserewf s 16stube 1.1 is screwed home, theran'nular en-- if Alargement 5 kwill bef-"drawn,tightly-against :the end of tube 4, and the parts `Williberse--` ficir not shown, and any Y suitable means maybe employed for forcing the. liquid through' the irrigator and for ca so ing for the drain.- h 16 represents a shield of concaVo-convex form which slides freely on the outer tube 1,
'and is adapted be Placed against thebodv- 'l when the nozzle end2 is projected into the Y wound; The shield 16 will operate as an inclosure to confine theliquid and compel the same to enter the opening 6 and pass Y throughtubes 4 and 14.
n win-he noted that 'with my improved irrigator, the' parts can be readily disconnected, separated, sterilized, and assembled,'
so that the irrigatorcan be kept "inJafy sani-l tary condition and mosteiiciently perform the functions for which it is intended- 1 Various slight-changes`mightbe madein the general form and arrangement of'parts described without departing from my in-` vention, and hence-I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider" f myself at liberty to make such changes and p alterations as fairly' fall within the-spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described myinvention,;what f' I claim-as new and desireto secure byy Letply tube, an outer tube inclosingsthe supply tube andforming a drainxpassagearound the same, said outer tubehavingl perforations adjacent one end, a ,drain tube communicating with thgroutefftube, a couplingy connecting the digg/tin' tube .withvlthe outer.
tube',`and havin an opening therein througi; which the supp y tube nro]ects, and a tu screwed onto the end of the supply tube andbearino' against the coupling, substan- 5 tially as described.
An irrigator of the characterdescribed,
' comprising an outer tube, an inner tube protherein adjacent the perforated end ,of the leating through the outer tube and having an Iannular enlargement thereon bearing against one end of the outer' tube, said supply tube having an open end and erforatlons 1n its wall beyond the end of t ie outer tube, said outer tube having perforations supply tube, means for directing liquid into the supply tube, and `means for-conveying liquid from the outer tube, substantially as described.
`tube projects, jecting end of the Vsur'mly tube and against p y tube having an open end outer tube, said outer tions therein adjacent the supplytube, a" coupling screwedy onto the end of the outer tube and having an opening therein through which .the supply a tube screwed onto the prothe counling operating to draw the annular enlargement on the supply tube against the end of the outer tube, and a drain tube municatng with the coupling, substantially as described.
'In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. l -HAROLD W, YOUNG. -Wvitnesses: y
