UNITE STATS PATE'I OFFIC 2% fl TOOL-HANDLE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr., 11', 1916,
Application filed November 2, 1915. Serial No. 59,240. I
T0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE B. CURRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Payson, in the county of Adams and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tool-Handles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in tool handles, the object of the invention being to provide improved and efficient means for detacliably securing a tool or implement to its handle and to preventl the tool or implement from Working loose from the handle.
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings vz--Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view of the adjoining ends of a handle and tool and with my improved means for detachably securing them together. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the ferrule. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the corresponding end of the handle.
The handle 1 has one end secured in a ferrule 2. In accordance with my invention the ferruled end of the handle is provided with a split 3 as well as with a socket 4 for the reception of the tang 5 of a tool or implement 6. The ferrule tapers toward its outer end and at its outer end is outwardly flared as at 7 The outer end of the ferrule is also provided with a split 8 which adapts the outer end of the ferrule to be diametrically reduced.
The tool or implement 6 may be of any kind and is here indicated as ay pitchfork.'
adapted for engagement by the threadedk portion l0 of the tool shank or head. f 'Ihe coupling sleeve is provided with a cylindrical extension 13 at its'inner end to turn and slide on the ferrule and the bore of which is inwardly tapered as at 14 and adapted to engage the outwardly iared surface 7 at the outer end of the ferrule so that when the coupling sleeve is turned to screw the same on the threaded portion 10 of the tool shank or head and thereby draw the tang 5 into the socket 4, the tapered bore of the coupling sleeve coacts with the outwardly flared outer end of the ferrule to diametrically reduce the` outer end of the ferrule and thereby cause the same to clamp the-opposite end of the handle firmly around the tang and effectually secure the latter in the handle, the coupling sleeve effectually securing the tool to the ferrule as will be understood.
While I have herein shown and described a preferred form of my invention I would have it understood that changes may be made lin the form, proportion and construction of the several parts without departing from the spirit of the invention and within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim In combination with a tool having a head or shank provided with a threaded portion and also provided with a tang, a handle having an end provided with a split for the reception of the tang, an outwardly tapered ferrule on the handle provided with an outwardly flared surface on its outer end and also provided with splits extending vto its outer end, and a coupling sleeve having a nut portion to engage the threaded portion of the tool shank and also having an eX- tension slidably and revolubly mounted on the ferrule and provided with an inwardly tapered bore to coact with the outwardly iared surface of the ferrule to compress the latter diametrically and thereby clamp the end of the handle on the tang.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EUGENE B. CURRY. Witnesses: y
