DISPENSING-CONTAINER FOIR MATCHES, 860.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed october 15, 1915. Serial No. 55,951.
picks, and like articles and has for its mainobject the provision of a receptacle in which such articles may be displayed and maintained in a safe and sanitary manner, free from dust. dirt and contamination by contact with thehands.
Another object is to provide'means whereby a single one of the stored articles is delivered unfailingly at each discharge and o the operation repeated indefinitely until the contents are exhausted.
These and other objects, such as neatness and symmetry of appearance, are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of a dispensing container made in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a partial vertical sectional view, showing the operative parts in normal position. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the same, but showing the dispensing device extcndcd. Fig. 4 is a detail plan View of the dispenser. Fig. 5 is a. transverse sectional view taken on line 55 of Fig. 4.-. Fig. 6 is a detail plan view of the agitator, and Fig. 7 is an end view of the same.
These containers are intended for use in places of a semi-public character and arranged to suit their special purpose, as delivering matches at cigar stands, or toothpicks in restaurants, where. if these articles are too freely accessible, as in open boxes, considerable loss is sustained through customers helping themselves to unwarranted quantities.
In the preferred embodiment the container consists of a rectangular casing having two sides 10 and a front 11 formed integrally of thin sheet metal, the vertical rear edges being grooved and beaded to receive the back plate 12 slidably therein, and provided with an extension 14 having an eye 15 for securing to wall or the like. Either or both of the sides may have panels formed of transparent material if preferred, through which the contents are visible, and if the container is to be used for matches, a roughened panel 17 may be formed with the front as indicated in Fig. 1. A cover 18 is secured rigidly at the top by clips 19 projecting from the sides and front, the clips being adapted to be turned over in the manner of rivets.
The sides 10 have out-turned flanges 20 wlnch serve as tracks for the recessed end edges' 22 of the sliding bottom 23, provided with an extending down-turned handle or pull 24, convenient of access at the front, and ad acent to the pull is a recess 25 extending entirely across the slide, adapted to contain a single article. The slide operates n a level plane, the main portions 23 reachmg back into the container in order to be guided by its side-walls, and form a bottom for 1t, the rear edge of the slide resting nor;
- mally upon the edge 26 formed with the back plate 12. It is to be noted that the ends 27 of therecess25 are in a lower plane than the central portion and also that the front plate 11 is raised along the ends 28 correspondingly in order to avoid igniting a match by inadvertent frictional contact when withdrawing it.
An inclined plate 30 having a longitudinally corrugated surface 31 is freely movable within the casing, its lower edge being pivotally engaged with the slide 23 by means of the hooks 33 which enter corresponding slots 34 formed in the slide in such manner that as the slide is withdrawn, the lower end of the plate 30 is drawn forward, allowing the rear edge 36 to slide down on the back plate 12, constantly changing its angular position, thus agitating the articles resting on the plate and causing the lowermost to readily enter the recess 25 when the slide is pushed back into the casing, at which time the corrugated plate will be raised at the rear as shown in Fig. 2. Thus it will be seen that the inclined plate 30 by reason of its shifting movement, will unfailingly deliver one of the articles into the recess 25, and that the article is readily obtained therefrom. 1
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to obtain by Letters Patent is 1. In a dispensing container, the combination with a casing and a supporting means therefor, of a slide engaged at the bottom of said casing, a channeled receiver formed with said slide, an operating means therefor, an angularly disposed plate having a corrugated surface movable within said casing and hinged connections between said slide and said plate whereby the angularity of the latter is changed by the movement of the slide.
2. In a dispensing container, the combination with a casing and a supporting means therefor, of a slide engaged at the bottom of said casing, a channeled receiver formed with said slide, an operating means therefor, a corrugated plate slidably disposed in said casing, said plate resting its rear edge against the back thereof, and flexible connections between said slide and said plate whereby the front edge of said plate may be drawn forward or pushed back, thereby changing its angular position, open actuating said slide.
3. In a dispensing container, the combination with a casing and a supporting meanstherefor, of a slide engaged at the bottom of said pasing, a channeled receiver formed with said slide, said receiver having an open top and an increased cross section at its ends, operating means for said slide, a movable inclined plate in said casing, means formed with said plate operable by said slide whereby the inclination of the plate is affected, and means formed with said casing for permitting a single article to pass out with said slide, said means being recessed at the ends, conforming to the enlarged portions of said receiver.
Signed at New York in the county of New York and State of New York this 9th day of October A. D. 1915. 1
