To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SALLIE A. SAEGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Allentown, in the county of Lehigh and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety De vices for Envelops, of which the following is a specification.

The device which is the subject-matter of the present application for patent is designed for use in connection with envelops for the purpose of safe-guarding the letters or other contents thereof.

The invention has for its object to provide a device which will render it impossible to tamper with the letter or other inclosure without that fact being indicated.

The invention also has for its object to provide a device of the kind stated which is extremely simple and readily applied, and which is cheap and does not add to the cost of manufacture of the envelop.

With the objects stated in view, the invention consists in a novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view showing its application.

In carrying out the invention, there is provided a sheet 5 of paper having short flaps 6 at its ends which are gummed on one side, as indicated at 7 These flaps may be integral with the sheet, or separate, and joined thereto in any approved manner.

The device is used as follows: The sheet 5 is folded in half, and the letter 8 or other part to be inclosed in the envelop 9, is placed between the folds. The flaps 6 are folded back so as to lie against the outside of the folded sheet with the gummed sides 7 exposed, one flap being on one side of the folded sheet and the other flap on the opposite side. The gummed sides of the flaps are then moistened and the folded sheet, with the letter therebetween, is inserted into the envelop, after which the front and back of the latter are pressed together, whereupon the flaps are pasted inside the envelop, one flap being pasted to the front and the other flap to the back. The letter is now securely fastened in the envelop and its removal is impossible Without tearing the sheet inclosing the letter. The flaps are at the free ends of the folds and they are pasted to the envelop at the bottom thereof, so that the folded sheet extends around and incloses the edge of the letter adjacent to the top and the sealing flap of the envelop. It will therefore be seen that the letter cannot be reached without tearing the enveloping sheet even though the sealing flap of the envelop were opened.

The sheet 5 will be made in various sizes to correspond to the different sizes of envelops, and it may be constructed of paper or any other suitable light flexible material. v The device is also useful in its application to envelops that have already been opened, to replace the letter in the original envelop to be again safe-guarded by the device.

The device may be made of various depths,

but it is preferable to have the attachment at the point farthest from the envelop openmg.

I claim 1. The combination with an envelop, of a safety device therefor and for its inclosure, said device comprising a sheet which is foldable intermediate its ends to receive the inclosure between the folds, and said sheet being positioned within the envelop so that the connecting portion of the folds is at the top thereof, the free ends of the folds having adhesive portions on the outside for connection to the front and back of the bottom por tion of the envelop on the inside thereof.
