ENVELOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 13, 1916.
Application filed October 31, 1913. Serial No. 798,548.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, IVJZLLIAM J. CARR and GEORGE F. HUTOHINGS, citizens of the United States, and residents of Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful I-mprovement in Envelops, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention is an improvement in envelops, and has for its object to provide an envelop which is ,capable of more than one use, the envelop being so arranged that it may be used many times, without destroying the same.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front View of an embodiment of the invention, Fig. 2 is a front view of the envelop shown in Fig. l, in open condition, Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows, and Fig. 4 is a detail view of the sealing strip shown in Fig. 1.
The embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 is formed from a sheet of paper of suitable size and weight, and cut to the form desired. The said blank is cut and creased to form a central fold 15, and lateral folds 16 and 17 each of the lateral folds 16 and 17 having a sealing flap 18 and 19, respectively, at the side edge remote from the central flap 15. In addition the lateral fold 16 is provided with end flaps 20. The flaps 16 and 17 are also provided with elongated, substantially elliptical openings 21 and 22 respectively. In addition a slot is out between each of the lateral flaps and the adjacent sealing flap, the said slots being designated by reference characters 23 and 24 respectively. The central flap 15 is provided with a pair of parallel, longitudinally extending, laterally spaced slots 25 at'approximately its center, the said slots being parallel with the slots 23 and 24: and being of equal length. After the blank has been cut and creased as above specified, the lateral flaps or folds -16 and 17 are folded over on opposite faces of the central flap 15 after which each of the sealing flaps 18 and 19 are folded down upon the outer face of the opposite lateral flap or fold. The inclosure is completed by folding over the end flaps 20 on the outer face of the lateral flap 17.
The sealing strip shown in Fig. 4 and used to close the envelop shown is of a length correspoi'iding to the size of the envelop with which it is to be used, and the said strip is preferably of the same paper as the envelop which it is intended to, seal. The strip is creased transversely to form three equal portions 26, 27, and 28 respectively. To seal the inclosure shown in l, the strip is passed through the slots 6 and 5 with the portion 27 of the strip inside the envelop, that is, between the body 1 and the fold 2, and the sealing strip 3 may be folded between the body 1 and the fold 2, or on the outer face of the fold 2. After being so arranged the end portions 26 and 28 are folded down upon each other, the portion 29 being beneath the portion 26, and the portion 26 is sealed to the portion 28. To open the envelop the sealing strip is cut at the junction between portions 27 and 26 or at the junction between portions 27 and 28, and the entire strip is removed.
In the construction shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, two receptacles are provided. The said construction, when not in use, will show two addresses, one on either face, but when in use, one of the addresses, namely, that not required is covered, the envelop being especially intended for reciprocal correspondence.
We claim:
An envelop formed from a blank cut and creased to provide a central fold and'a lateral fold at each side of the central fold, and a sealing fiap at the outer side edge of each lateral fold, one of the lateral folds having end flaps and each lateral fold having a central opening and adapted to register with the opening of the other lateral fold when the said lateral folds are folded on to I the central fold, the blank having a slotat ends of the strip being adapted to be folded closing th envelop and adapted to pass the lateral folds when the said folds are through one of the slots of the central fold folded on to the central fold. and one of the slots of a lateral fold With WILLIAM CARR the body of the strip Within the envelop, the GEORGE F HUTGHINGS' Witnesses:

upon each other and sealed, the slots of the central fold being adapted to register With the opposite side edges of the openings of Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of ratents,
