Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 27, 11916.
Application filed March 20, 1916. Serial No. 85,483.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GARDNER M. Yves BER, a citizen of the United States, reslding at Stoneham, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Toy, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toys of that type utilizing dancing figures, one of the objects of the invention being to provide a device of this character having several keys which can be actuated by diiferent fingers or by hammers such as used in performing on xylophones, thereby to cause the figure to keep time with the movement of the fingers or hammers, producing an amusing effect.
A further object is to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction, cheap to manufacture, and which can be easily taken apart so as to be housed in a small space.
With the foregoing and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter de scribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings :-Figure 1 is a section through the device. Fig. 2 is a section on line A-B Fig. 1.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a box constituting the base of the toy and on this box is arranged a cover 2 having guide sleeves 3 in which are slidably mounted separate stems 4: provided at their upper ends with keys 5. The lower ends of the stems rest upon one arm of a lever 6 which is fulcrumed as at 7 upon a bracket 8 depending from the cover, the other arm of the lever being provided with a fiat extension 9. Springs 10 are connected to the two arms of the lever and to the cover so as to hold said lever normally substantially horizontal. If desired, one or more arms 11 may be extended laterally from the flat extension 9 of the lever and each of these arms .may have a fiat extension or enlargement 12. Ar ranged on the cover are one or more guide sleeves 13 and in each of these sleeves is slidably mounted a stem 14. One of these stems is provided for each of the fiat portions 9 and 12 and each stem depends from the body 15 of a dancing figure having jointed legs as shown at 16.
It will be apparent that where three keys -5 are employed, three fingers of one hand can be used for successively depressing the keys to keep time with any composition or, if desired, small hammers can be used such as employed in playing a Xylophone. Furthermore the number of keys can be reduced or increased.
It will be apparent that each time one of the keys is depressed, the stem or stems 14: will be quickly elevated against the action of one of the springs 10 and as soon as the key is released the spring will return the lever 6 to its normal position, while the stem or stems 14: and the figures carried thereby will drop back to their lower positions, this movement causing the jointed legs to flex so that the figures will simulate dancing, the movements being in time with movement of the keys 5.
As the stems 14: are not connected to the lever, they are free to rotate so that the figures supported thereby will thus turn while dancing and add to the amusement of the user. When the device is not in use the stems 14 can be removed from the sleeves 13 and the figures deposited in the box 1. Stems 4 can also be removed and placed in the box and, consequently, the entire structure can be stored in a small space.
It is to be understood that if desired, the arms of the figures can be jointed so that they will flex in time with the movement of the keys.
Instead of using the fingers of one hand or two hammers for the purpose of actuating the keys, the fingers on both hands may be employed, as will be obvious. Furthermore instead of arranging the keys in line with the longitudinal axis of the lever, they can be arranged transversely thereof if preferred in the same manner as the stems 14.
What is claimed is 1. A toy including a spring restrained lever, a key resting on and slidably supported above one arm of the lever, a stem slidably and revolubly supported upon the other arm of the lever and detachable therefrom, and a jointed figure carried by the stem.
2. A toy including a spring restrained lever guides thereabove, actuating stems slidahly and removably mounted in the guides and bearing on one arm of the lever, another guide, a detachable stem slidably.
and revolubly mounted therein and bearing on the other arm of the lever, and a jointed .for restraining the movement of the lever,
stems slidably mounted Within the cover and detachably mounted on one arm of the lever,
a stem slidably and 'revolubly mounted Within the cover and detachably mounted on the other arm of the lever, and a jointed figure carried by said stem.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aifixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
